Gibraltar 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
doors - holding open
are the doors supposed to stay open when opened of close? normally i would expect them to stay open on a car but every door on my defender closes on its own if left unheld when fully open.

They should stay open. Check that the check straps are tight (or there at all)! An engine to TDi for!

Mine stay open unless:
- there's a gentle breeze
- I park on a slope
- I look at the door
- it's an even day of the month
- I'm in a county ending in '-shire'
- it would be convenient if it stayed open
- I try to make it stay open

I have the same issue, my front doors never stayed open from new, but after I mentioned it to my dealer a few months ago at the time of the scheduled service, they remembered that and when I recently made an appointment for this coming week for replacing the summer wheels by the winter wheels, they told me that they will also sort the door stays then. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Not open on their own, but when you open it you get a rather swift motion (very forceful), that can catch you off guard! Once you've opened it, it goes to full opening, and full opening only! An engine to TDi for!

You can tighten up the torsion bar all you like but I think there is is another reason the doors swing closed so easily. Inside the sliding channel for the check stay and beyond the torsion bar is a grey rubber like bumper or spacer that limits the travel on the front door to stop you hitting the door on the bulkhead. Its normally about 15mm deep. This stops the round sliding bearing in the channel travelling past the torsion bar properly, so the torsion bar lock is only partially activated and not allowing the bearing head on the checkstrap to pass completely and therefore closing in gentle breeze, slightest uphill situation etc...


Try this:

(Assuming door trim and other plastics are not in the way)
Remove pin from door side of checkstrap and remove checkstrap from channel
Loosen torsion bar, prise it open with large screw driver and slide out rubber spacer.
Refit checkstrap and pin and open door fully, see if door edge fouls bulkhead, chances are it might or possibly strain wiring harness to door.
Measure how much you need to allow the bearing to move to pass the torsion bar completely and reseat into place. this ensures a good positive hold open lock.
Trim the rubber to suit and remove checkstrap and insert spacer and grease everything up nicely, refit checkstrap, tighten up torsion bar bolts (with loctite)and you are done.

Two benefits : The hold open function now works as it should, and your door now opens somewhat wider and allows better access.... cheap yet effective mod. Bit of a bind on a Puma as you have to partially remove / loosen the dash to do it easily, although you could try "keyhole" surgery through the speaker apertures...

Worked like a treat on my Puma and combined with the Nakatenga brackets for the rear doors I now have doors on my defender that open wide and stay that way. Happy days.

yes I agree they are too forceful .. I got another gas strut made with less force .. company on net make them to what you want force wise cost about Ł24 with post ... same fittings only bit was it was 5mm shorter overall .but much better does not open now like its trying to put arm out of the socket
