AFAIK only the rubber A bars are legal now. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

![]() Plenty of companies offering bumpers like this - is the collective view that they are not compliant for road use? |

I was under the impression that integral A bars were legal, as made-for-purpose, i.e. for winch mountings etc. Adding a winch adds credibility....

I don't think any A-Frame is illegal. The whole nonsense back in the 90s was over the top.
I'm not sure they are illegal but insurance companies can take a frowned look upon them. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

The legislation I looked at was dated 2009 and applied to a "Frontal protection system"
‘frontal protection system’ means a separate structure or structures, such as a bull bar, or a supplementary bumper which, in addition to the original-equipment bumper, is intended to protect the external surface of the vehicle from damage in the event of a collision with an object, with the exception of structures having a mass of less than 0,5 kg, intended to protect only the vehicle’s lights. I guess asking the supplier if they are type approved as part of this legislation or not deemed covered by it would be interesting. |

To be fully compliant, yes. Only the genuine Landrover protection bar is approved for 2007 on Defenders.
There is (IIRC) a loophole if it is part of a winch set up. John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |
