The Kenwood KVT-526
The KVT-526 is back again after a long time being out of stock on justkenwood.co.uk. Price is very very good too, especially being brand new. A year or two ago these were retailing for £300 - £420
Very easy fit in the Defender as there is no additional modules as standard, remove old HU fit single DIN cage check and fit wiring and slot in. Job done. Thumbs Up

yeah, and doesn't even have BT as standard... looks ok but not exactly mind blowing.

personally i don't think they work in defenders because they cover switches, clock and air vents

but looks a pretty good option for other vehicles/base spec ones -quality will be good.

ill stick with my parrot asteroid.. BT, 3x USB, handsfree dialling which works perfectly, iPod in, aux in, internet enabled etc etc etc Cheers, David

I have a similar one from 'another manufacturer' , the format does work in a Defender, the clock/vents are not covered - granted there are a few switches covered but I have found that's its only ones I don't use that often and more often than not if I have the radio on the screen is closed.

That one is a good price, although if you factor in £399 for sat nav, £99.99 for bluetooth, £29.95 - £34.95 for a cable to connect an iPod/phone Shocked then its looking pretty costly compared to something that has it all included (Clarion springs to mind).

I didn't want to connect and power a load of extra boxes which ruled out the Kenwood and Alpine offerings, which didn't leave much else.

I'm sure its a good unit and if you already have a sat nav then its a bargain Thumbs Up Be nice when they spruce up the graphics a bit as well. Also a good idea if you want to fit Kenwood speakers - you know they will match up ok.

Depends on what the individual wants from their system, both have their pros and cons but does allow you to add what you want and leave what you don't. Also gives you good upgrade capability when tech changes which it often does. Without the extra sockets and all built in it makes it more difficult as the hardware you have is what you get. Double din works equally well but again has it's advantages and disadvantages. One of those is the fact the centre das for one costs a fortune and I also don't like the switch relocation. No Guts, No Glory.

Right then, firstly i know nothing about ICE systems.

i would like a unit that does DVDs/BT/Sat Nav/CDs and radio to fit in single DIN for Puma

Fold up screen i am happy with.

Does this unit do all that? Cheers

BT and satnav would require extra (not cheap!) modules Cheers, David

So any suggestions as to what unit would do all that.

considering either a stand along Garman (prob) sat nav system and new stereo or something that does the whole lot. open to any suggestions. Cheers

Very good price. It's a great sounding system. Screen doesn't really get in the way in day to day use.

The map updates for the sat-nav bit are a bit of a pain though. You can get the lifetime upgrades from Garmin quite cheaply for their own devices, but not for the Garmin/Kenwood sat-navs... Seems a new SD card at £100ish for each upgrade is the only option available.

Had no problems with a "Flip Screen" unit in a defender,,

The Kenwood looks very good value in bog form !!

Ran a Pioneer in the first couple, that got swap from one to the other,, another new updated one in the current 110, Phone, DVD, Nav, I pod USB etc etc

What phone do you have?

I have an iphone 5 and use the TOMTOM app, around £45 for the whole of Western Europe or £30 ish for just the UK & Ireland one. Better than standalone IMO because maps update for free, it's easy to use, can grab addresses from contacts on your phone, google maps etc.

Also available on android etc

I use a parrot asteroid classic Single Din unit in the car because I can stream bluetooth, use their (by far the best) bluetooth hands free - hand on heart never got a name / number wrong, as well as all the usual stuff (& Internet connectivity)

They're not 'cheap' but not expensive either. Around £250-280 but I'm not sure if they're still making them. Shops may still sell them or ebay, if not:

They do a selection of 'add-on kits' some of which are now touch screen and support the tomtom app (a lot run android) and I've had car kits before off them which were v good.

The BT module for the Kenwood is £99 but allows music streaming, phone book available on screen and text messages. (Depends on phone and HU combination)
Sat nav module however is expensive at £399 hence why I use a garmin stand alone sat nav. Easier to update and cheaper too.
Having said this the Kenwood 2 DIN HU's have all this included in one unit however the price does reflect this in all the models.
I like the 526 because you get your base HU in and then you can add to it what you want when you want it. There has been comments made about them not being able to stand up to Defender ruggedness and terrain vibration abuse etc, none of this is true! They are surprisingly strong regardless of make IMO. (Premium range at least)
Kenwood are OE in high end Mitsubishi cars / 4x4s. No Guts, No Glory.

James, I would personally would settle for a decent DAB head unit with Bluetooth, and then buy an Ipad. Fitted Sat-Nav is old technology. It is also very one dimensional. The Kenwood sat nav is a £399 option - same price as the Ipad, but the Ipad will do so much more, If noting else the screen is bigger an so much clearer. Although I have no experience with it myself, there are several members using various apps to map routes (memory map?). Landy Andy I think is in the process of setting it up in his new double cab. Saw it on his thread about Tallon socket. Might be worth a PM Wink

Agree with Jim above, I have the Wifi ipad only myself but the cellular version also has GPS too, but the catch is you need a contract to use it and thus you guessed it, more money! Saying that if you have the wifi only ipad as I have you can still use mapping apps in the same way you would a paper copy. Just a digitalised form, much easier IMO.
I like the Ram mount on the passenger grab handle it looks good there and really secure. Not quite sure how I'll get on with three screens though. Whistle May as well get a 40" in I think. Laughing No Guts, No Glory.
