The overall 4x4 market in Aus is HUGE, in comparison with which, the number of Defenders sold is "Microscopic".
"Everybody" seems to drive an "SUV" as these types of vehicles are now being called, even if they don't need 'em. There's literally hundreds, probably thousands of varieties of Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Honda. Vehicles like Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrols, Mitsubishi Pajeros etc etc. The Toyota HiLux is the most popular work vehicle, and for touring/towing caravans etc, the Toyota LandCruiser is the vehicle by which all others are judged. There are VERY VERY few Defenders on the Road in Aus, relative to the 4x4 market, & many of the ones that are around are not new. The LandRover used to have a big market in Aus, but it's been literally overwhelmed by the Japanese, Korean,...."Asian" invasion, who have all produced vehicles more attractive to buyers than the LandRover.....bigger, more powerful, more comfortable, more features etc. And we've now started to get new cars/imports from China, "Great Wall", being the first! 4x4 is big business in Australia, there are several TV shows etc, & many magazines, detailing off road trips into the outback, Simpson Desert etc, but ya very rarely see a Defender. I suppose if you're going to "go bush" maybe with a big off road trailer etc, a Toyota Lancruiser Diesel takes a lot of beating...Big, Powerful, comfortable, virtually unstoppable in most conditions. I reckon most Defender sales these days would be to enthusiasts. You really don't see many around....we ordered our "90" in June, & I reckon I've seen only a couple of 90s on the road in that time, & maybe a dozen 110 S/W. I don't have the exact numbers, but I believe total defender sales for the year are around 600. Compare that with the Hilux, which has been known to sell 3000 in ONE MONTH!! BUT, we're looking forward to our first "LandRover" in a few weeks....Wifey can't wait! Cheers, Pickles. |

Thanks for reply - must seem extra special when you are importing a vehicle from half way around the world. I'm sure it will feel special when you get it there.

In Chile,
The Defender can compete in the SUV or pickup truck market (as a leisure or working car. Number of SUV sold in 2012: 67,765 units Number of pickup truck sold in 2012: 58,278 units Land Rover total sales in 2012: 575 units (0.8% of the SUV market) Defender sales per year: probably between 25 to 30 units. (0.03% of the SUV market and 0.02% of the SUV + pickup trucks) Cheers! Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |
