No bonnet hinges can stop the theft of a bonnet.

What they will do is slow down the thieves!

OK do not fit security bonnet hinges, thief comes along smashes window, release the bonnet to find bonnet secured by a steel cable. OK bonnet does not disappear but you have a smashed window to replace. Apart from the mess of the broken glass, the expense of replacing it, do you claim on your broken glass clause of your insurance policy with the risk of your premiums going up.

Fit security hinges, if would be thief is observant and notice them beforehand, yes he may come tooled up to remove the hinges, but would he wonder if additional security precautions have been taken such as steel cables and move along for easier pickings?

We will never know how many thieves spot security hinges and just move along for easier pickings.

Talking to various independent LR traders, the theft of bonnets seems to be reasonably rare in Scotland, however talking to various English one company replaces an average of 3 bonnets per month.

Cost of repairing window and replacing bonnet replacing them etc can exceed a £1,000. Security hinges cost between £85-155.

Thanks for the explanation - I'm genuinely interested in finding a solution I'd be comfortable with and what you have said is new to me and makes sense. the ones I'd been looking at were these:

rather than:

Are you saying that if you grip either of the two stainless spacers you cannot undo the bolts?

Bonnet security hinges will NOT stop the theft of a bonnet.

What it WILL DO is

(a) provide a visible deterrent

(b) slow them down.

The average bonnet thief is a smash and grab type thief who wants to be in and away with the bonnet as quickly as possible.

To slow the thieves down even more you can fill the head of the bolt with silicone or similiar and use a thread lock fluid.

IF a thief is determined to be away with your Defender or parts of it, it is extremely difficult to prevent it. All you can do is use different methods of security and hope that the scumbag moves along to the next vehicle.

Above all else do not let the fear/experience of the scumbags rule/ruin your choice/enjoyment of YOUR vehicle.

As forum members are aware we sell these hinges and we talk to various garages etc. One of the bigger garage says on average they replace 3 stolen bonnets per month. Another one in Scotland says they do not have a problem with bonnets being stolen. Touching wood, to date I have not heard of a bonnet fitted with security hinges being stolen.

So it is up to the individual Defender owner to decide if bonnet hinges are part of their layered security approach.

I have the ones in the picture & replied from memory - always a bad thing for the over 50's - I was wrong Embarassed

But still think they act as a deterrent & look 8)
