Any further progress Steve? Did you sort the grille out? 2011 110 USW

That top photo looks ace. I'm slightly jealous of all the work you are doing to yours, all mine does these days is the short commute from work to home. I haven't done anything to it as all my spare cash is going on the Mrs' 88". She was failed again on her driving test the other day by a total butt-hole examiner who apparently almost never passes anyone. This is twice he has failed her. Her drive was fine and we are making a complaint, but it has still cost us (or should I say wasted us) a load of cash...I hate the DSA with a passion, especially as I know through experience they do pass people who should not be on the road! 2011 110 USW

Sorry to hear that - same story with my missus several years ago. She gave up at that point so will be hard to get back behind the wheel... I'm looking forward to seeing pics of the 88" when it's all sorted. I have the opposite problem in terms of use - too much driving and not enough time for tinkering! My company Evoque should turn up soon so I can take the Defender out of service for a few weeks to fit the extra wiring, fridge mount etc. Not decided on the grille finish yet - silver galv may look a bit much, so maybe black powder coat would be more subtle. Hmm... |

Hi Steve, you can keep tabs on the 88" at - https://www.facebook.com/siegfried88?fref=ts just had a galv chassis for it.
I'd agree about silver on the grille, the stage 1 had black which looked a bit more subtle. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

Great stuff! I've finally found a reason to go on Facebook! I'll be keeping a keen eye on progress - you have inspired me to crack on with my Lightweight (5yrs and counting!!).
Think you're right re the grille - satin black should look good, hopefully soon with a Devon 4x4 HD bumper (I'm not a fan of the flimsy standard one) to match. Cheers, Steve. |

Steve I've just looked at all your photos and posts of your defender on this topic and I'm very impressed - it looks amazing. Have none of these changed affected your warranty?
What were those bonnet hinges? Are they for extra security? |

Well hopefully the warranty is still valid for the bits I've not tinkered with, but I haven't had the need to test it yet, fingers crossed!
Clearly if there are issues with corrosion near where I've drilled holes I'm on my own, but I've made sure to thoroughly rust-proof everything at the same time. The roof rack, tent, awning etc hasn't affected the insurance premium for some reason (it's all declared, no extra cost to me!). Yes, the hinges are for security reasons - to make it harder for thieving toerags to lift the bonnet off its hinges and straight onto ebay for an easy few hundred quid... |

What does the bumper you want look like? I don't like the look of most of the aftermarket ones. I'd have a big galv one off an ex-DNO vehicle if/when I go for a winch. 2011 110 USW

I totally agree - I'm not a fan of most of them, but I found this one (which is also the cheapest!):
Looks like the standard one (I don't need a winch), but made from 5mm thick steel and with two decent recovery points built in - the main reason for wanting one. Have just placed my order for one - it's dangerous having a rainy weekend and access to the internet and a credit card! Erm... having re-read that sentence at least I'm buying Defender bits and nothing more seedy I guess!! |

Ah yes that's quite subtle. I'd probably go for the series style recovery rings that sit on top of the bumper if it was me. 2011 110 USW

I was thinking along those lines too! Pesky air-con sticky-out nose gets in the way unfortunately...

I've finally got around to sorting out a few holiday photos from our various trips around the UK over the past few months with the Defender. Here's a selection...
North Wales: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Testing out the tent and Foxwing in Nottinghamshire (looking gormless!): Click image to enlarge Festival camping in Cornwall: Click image to enlarge Walking around the Isle of Wight: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So it's fair to say that we absolutely love our Defender and it really suits our lifestyle. It's amazing how many conversations it has started with random strangers too! |
