Don't rink there's any problems with LED bulbs at all. Chris @ CSK Land Rovers (site sponsor here) sells LEDs, so may be worth seeing what he can do for you rather than ebay

Hi Chris, No issues with fitting Led Bulbs as they will work fine. However as I am sure someone else will be along in a minute to point out ,Led bulbs in a standard Land Rover light fitting are illegal as the light is only E marked for a normal filament bulb. Not sure how bothered you are about that as most people agree that an LED Bulb is a worthwhile upgrade and most sellers do sell a lot of them!

First issue? What you are proposing is illegal Obligatory lights have to be type approved, for that read E mark these days. I general terms the obligatory lights fitted by Land Rover are type approved for filament bulbs Replace a filament bulb with the appropriate filament bulb is legal. Replace the filament bulb with an LED then the type approval is invalid and the light is illegal Replacing the filament light fitting in its entirity with a correct type approved E marked LED assembly then that is legal. Have had some experience with these e bay LED previously and their longevity was not what they claimed! You may experience problems with the flash rate on the indicators. After the Peterborough show someone phoned me up complaining that the set of Leds he bought was not working correctly. I quickly informed him he had not bought them from us, chances are that he would need a load ballast or loading module. Brendan |

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your input, I take your point about the illegality of the bulbs Brendan but the reason I was looking at these comes down to cost, I don't think I can justify the cost of a full replacement light set. Chris, I do not think that interior lights are obligatory lights, therefore type approval etc is not a legal requirement so changing them is not an issue.
If you require lights for camping then LED is the way to go to save battery power. For external camping lights, no e mark required but I would suggest one or two with a decent IP rating (Ingress Protection) of 67 However I would suggest you do not go for massive light output say about 1,000 lumens but with a decent flood pattern. You would only need a 5-10 metre range not half a mile. Brendan |

Thanks for the info re interior lights. I agree about the camping lights, there are currently 2 "worklights" fitted to the rear of my roofrack, really I think they are just cheap spotlights, the beam pattern is pretty useless and I do intend to change these for LED floodlights to give more coverage. For rear work lights I would recommend the VisionX LEDs wot Brendan sells. We have 2 on the back of my 90 for camping etc- not cheap but they are bright enough without being too dazzley and very neat and tidy shape.

Rigid Industry dually's are pretty good too, for work lights, available in flood or spot patterns (or one of each)

No idea on the technicals but the factor with LEDs seems to be to do with lumens rather than watts.

A general point to be aware of is that illegal fittings may affect warranty of other parts, but most importantly insurance validity. Chris, the Vision X light uses a 10 watt LED and is rated at 900 lumens.
Wattage of any light has little to do with light output which is the important part of a light. The Vision X light draws about 0.8 amps and has a calculated raw lumen output of 900 lumens. Brendan |

I wanted to know the wattage to work out the current draw to see how they compared to the 2 lights which are currently fitted to my Landrover 2x55w, approx 8 amps, so 10 times as much as 1 Vision X ! Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |
