I must say that I always thought "1st dibs" was another way of saying "I'll buy it".

If that's not what it means, then I'm with you Matt. No way to put a non-binding hold on a sale, not fair.

I think a clear commit to buy, otherwise consider it still for sale.

cheers

Must agree with Matt that this is happening, and is not nice. But not sure how Martin could enforce it.

I suppose you couldn't enforce it, BUT... you could just name & shame the individuals who mess you about...

just re-advertise it saying "back for sale due to ........" and fill the name in. eventually either the time wasters will be outed, or people will just shy away from messing as they don't want to be embarresed or branded a waster.

Its a tough one as most users are genuine on this forum. Just a thought- How about acknowledging the 'First Dibs' and held for 48hrs awaiting deposit. There can be no come back, its plain English, both parties know where they stand, and so do other forum uses Thumbs Up Its up to us then as thread starters to enforce it, and will also be enforceable for sponsors such as Matt, as everything was posted in an open public forum = No Arguing, Backstabbing,No Comeback

Sorry to disagree, but why should people be allowed a 48 hour window to think about it.

Of course there will be sincere buyers who then have to back out for a genuine reason, I understand that, it's the guys who put an item 'to one side' whilst they check sizes etc.

I appreciate sizes have to be checked but 'snooze you lose', check the sizes quickly ! Mr. Green

^^ This just shows the difference of opinions which means that an enforced policy is unworkable.

I agree (or do I?)

It does seem potentially unfair for the seller (or other potential buyers) that first reply is often 'first dibs' which really means:

'I don't want anyone else to buy this item until I decide whether:

I really want to buy it
or - it will fit my hybridised lr
or - my missus won't notice
or - I can't get it cheaper online etc.

This could have the potential to stall the sale while people get their act together and a genuine buyer might miss out or lose the plot with the thread (bearing in mind not everyone is able to be in front of a pc during the day)

Probably the easiest thing rather than make more work with a firm rule, would be for the seller to state (if he's bothered) something "like first reply on this thread saying 'I want to buy this item' gets it" maybe along with"payment within a specified time frame", or item will be sold to next interested buyer. Or "I won't reserve this if someone comes along with a firm offer to buy" (while you are making up your mind whether a set of pink seat covers is really what you want)

There is always going to be hot competition for sought after items (unlike the no replies for my 1989 original cubby box - thought that would be a collectors item Rolling Eyes ) so its maybe best to leave it up to the seller to set his own rules and best manage the responses.

While we are at it - the type of sales posts which don't give much information are not very helpful, as an example "For sale - green tent £250 ono" - this means a load of pm's and replies to thread, potentially jostling frustrated customers while they await more info from the seller which could easily have been put in the initial sales post.

'Pics available' doesn't really cut it either , after all the work Martin has put in there is now excuse for not posting pictures while you are typing in the post (if you don't have any to hand then leave the post until you have). Its just being lazy and making more work for yourself (the seller) down the line. Obviously not all items need pictures as most will know what they are "set of spark plugs in box" springs to mind, whereas "pretty landscape by John Constable" pictures would help (in case I already had that one Laughing )

A full description, measurements if appropriate, photo(s) should be the minimum amount of info on a sales post (plus price of course).

Kettles boiled now so got to go.......

For Me this forum has been a priceless resource, which I discovered by accident. I have been a member on other car forums, but have not found one as friendly and as helpful. The majority of us are totally genuine, but as in todays society, occasionally we are blighted by an inconsiderate few. I personally have never had any dealings with any......yet, and everyone I have PM'd met brought and sold stuff too has been as genuine as me. As a collective the knowledge shared is unparalleled, and not just confined to Defenders.
As with all forums, it is a faceless form of communication, impersonal, and people sometimes abuse that. I am sure we have all interpreted a post or thread totally different to the tone it was written. I personally want to believe in the best of other forum users, and so will follow my own advice should I encounter the First dibs scenario. The reason I suggested it was simple- its there for all to see and date/time marked. You can set any time frame you want, to me 48 hours just seemed appropriate. No need to name and shame, it'll all be done for you Thumbs Up

Having given this more thought, I think your suggestion is probably the most workable Jim Thumbs Up

I didn't start this thread to make a big issue, more a personal observation and to show my frustration Rolling Eyes
