Do you know what the volatges should be for a healthy battery - also what is the spec for the correct OE (or better) battery? I might just get a new one as winter is fast approaching and I cant afford a failure.

Clive, depending on the state of charge, a battery will read approximately 12.6v when lightly charged, and 13.2v when fully charged. There are very slight differences from technology to technology. You also need to make sure that you read the voltage after the engine has stopped for several minutes, as you can get a false reading if the battery has recently had a charger or alternator re-charging it. Another crucial test is to measure the terminal voltage whilst the starter motor is under load; if the battery droops down on voltage too much (less than 9.5v), then it is also on the way out. Old batteries can quite often look good on a voltmeter, until they are put under load.
If you really get stuck, you could search-out your friendly local auto electrician with an oscilloscope to map the starting currents and voltages! Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Thanks SkyeRover, I think I'm just going to buy a new one as the capacity is only 72ah the voltage has dropped overnight and I'm getting starting issues.
Are there any advantages to a genuine LR over others like Bosch?
Cheers

Longer lifetime, mine is 6 years old and still going strong. Shocked the Bosh is cheaper so probably why it was fitted. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

The original Landrover unit is a Yuasa OEM battery. You could save a bit of money by just buying a decent battery of the correct size from Skye Auto Spares (which was just Yuasa as of this year), as that is what he deals with there. These seem to last well, and seem to recover from deep discharge fairly reliably - not that I would make a habit of it! I have had many batteries through Julian and Dave, so wouldn't hesitate to recommend SAS. You can get a decent battery in the compartment, so you are not fixed to just one type. If your old battery is on the way out, then you probably don't have anything close to the benefit of a 75Ah rating, and a new 90Ah will transform your electrical reserve. I am running a 105Ah on my 300Tdi, but would have to re-check the type number.

All the best Clive. Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

just FYI

- Puma OEM LR battery is a varta, TD5 was a Yuasa.

- It is not from their standard car battery range but a leisure deep-cycle type.(wet type so not AGM or gel but indeed deep-cycle) (somewhere in the threads on here i once did a write up where you can find the exact spec)

- Bosch selects and rebrands batteries produced by Varta. Their standard car series get a higher pricetag as they come with longer warranty terms (3-4-5 years depending on the series) compared to the Varta branded equivalent. Some sources also say that this is related to a post production testing/selection where bosch gets the premiums over Varta.
But these have nothing in common with the deep cycle type LR selected for the Puma from varta (there is no exact replacement from Bosh for the OEM Puma battery)
