Hi all - I've trolled through the forum but can't find a solution.
3 times since I bought the (57) 110 USW in May this year, I've gone to start it (once from cold, twice warm) and all the dash lights have come on as normal but nothing else - not trying to turn over, no clicking no nothing. the fist time when it was cold, was the day after i'd bought it! checked all the battery connections - then it started. the second time, had driven for about an hour, then parked for an hour or two - same problem - did nothing for 5 minutes, then it started. Yesterday - drove for an hour, stopped and started a couple of times, no problems, stopped for 2 minutes, then it wouldn't start again. left it for 5 minutes - bingo, back to normal..... any ideas welcomed. cheers Clive Series IIa Lightweight - Long Gone Discovery 1 300Tdi - Sold Defender 110 XS 07MY Utility |

When this happens does your alarm light, the red one at the bottom of the dials, stay on continuously i.e. does not flash when you insert the key? If it does you will know before you turn the key that the vehicle is not going to start. Should it happen again, just remove the key from the ignition, press lock then unlock on the fob. Your vehicle will now start.
Don't worry about it as it is a programming glitch. I have two sets of keys for the 2011 Puma and one set does this occasionally. This set was supplied and programmed by a maindealer as I was short a set on delivery. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Hi Spudfan, thanks for the reply.
I didn't notice. If / when it does it again i'll look for it ( I should have known to check for that as my old 300Tdi Disco did it all the time!!) I have put new batteries in the remotes, but am only using one of them - the other is locked away in my safe. Thinking about it, yesterday when it didn't start - i didn't press the lock or unlock buttons or operate the door locks - I just sat there for a couple of minutes and just turned the key again (didn't even take the key out of the ignition barrel), and it sprang into life. It's behaved itself today..... Series IIa Lightweight - Long Gone Discovery 1 300Tdi - Sold Defender 110 XS 07MY Utility |

Don't know about that fix. Like I stated above it only happens occasionally but always with the same set of keys. Other set is perfect. Maybe there are two different issues but both cause the same fault? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

right - failed to start again today, different symptoms this time....
turned the key, the starter sounds like it's trying to turn the engine, but only getting about 1/4 of a turn then stops. tried again, same thing. took the key out - locked it, unlocked it, key back in, turned the key and it started no problem! don't know - it's a Bosch Silver 72ah loads of other numbers on it - none look like dates.
I have a Scan Gauge attached and the voltage is always between 14.1 and 14.4 depending on what's switched on. Series IIa Lightweight - Long Gone Discovery 1 300Tdi - Sold Defender 110 XS 07MY Utility |

That isn't an OE battery though, what voltage does it read at rest? Also have you checked all terminals are tight? You probably have anyway but worth a look. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

according to the scan gauge it's 12.9 at rest - I've taken the battery out (the terminals were clean and tight) stuck it on a charger for a couple of hours - all back together and still working - I wonder if the battery is on it's way out?
Do you know what the volatges should be for a healthy battery - also what is the spec for the correct OE (or better) battery? I might just get a new one as winter is fast approaching and I cant afford a failure. I can't seen to find the info anywhere. cheers Clive Series IIa Lightweight - Long Gone Discovery 1 300Tdi - Sold Defender 110 XS 07MY Utility |

Clive - The voltages look about right but it could indeed do with changing, difficult to say though without proper testing.

I suspect an immobiliser issue - I had these exact symptoms yesterday when i tried to start with my spare keys that do not have a remote fob on them. Even using the main keys, it would not crank until I had got out, shut the door, locked and unlocked with the fob and tried to start again. My blog - www.anacreinhampshire.blogspot.co.uk

I'm pretty sure the fob has a proximity sensor (similar to RFID). If the fob isn't near the ignition barrel when you turn the key then the immobiliser won't disarm. However, if you unlock the doors you have a limited time to start before the immobiliser re-arms. When this happens the immobiliser led is lit.
So Simon, what you experienced is exactly what is expected. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |
