yes i did, Brendan supplied one, 45L side tank in the end. easy to fit and fills off the main filler and that fills the main tank.

105/110L tank now, i loose a bit as i didnt fit a balance pipe, too vulnerable in my opinion

@ JST or anyone that knows....

What exactly does the balance pipe do? I've got a tank here which, after some repairs, will be fitted, and it needs said balance pipe.

What would happen if one were leave the pipe out? I would have thought that after xx miles driving the fuel would eventually splash down into the main tank if there was a vacuum effect?

Wouldn't of thought there would be a vacuum effect. Surely it would breath through the filler cap if needed. It would just gravity feed.
Also why does the balance pipe need to be fitted to the bottom of the main tank rather than in the top? 110 D250 SE HT

The balance pipe simply joins the bottoms of the two tanks together, balancing the fuel level between the tanks and ensuring that as much of the fuel as possible is drained from the auxiliary tank. Normally the pipe will be as low as practicable on the aux tank and an inch or so above the bottom of the main tank. Gravity will ensure that the fuel drains form the aux tank into the main tank.

Without the pipe any fuel below the main pipe in the auxiliary tank would not be useable. There is no vacuum effect, even if the tanks are below atmospheric pressure they will both be at the same pressure. Any "splash effect" can work both ways. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Ahh, I get it. The balance pipe makes sure that the last little bit of fuel can drain out of the aux tank instead of sitting below the main through-flow pipe.

Thinking about the balance pipe, it does seem to be a bit exposed and what do you gain by fitting it? 5-10L. I think I'd rather have peace of mind and lose 5L of capacity. 110 D250 SE HT

Yes the complete range of items we can supply are not on our website. Barbara still has another job! Razz

One of our problems is the vast range of fuel tanks we can supply from the plastic wing tanks for 90's to wing tanks for 110 in ali, mild steel, stainless steel, double bottomed or just a single skin bottom, the Puma's are a different shape to those of earlier Defender models. Then there are larger main tanks, 3 materials and two different bottoms, Then there are sill tanks.

Drop us an email/pm with your requirement and vehicle and I will try and sort something out for people.

As for the balance pipe and it being vunerable, we have not found it to be a problem. Have had a wing tank and balance pipe fitted to our red 110 for at least 8 years. In that 8 years have been to many countries, on and off tarmac, setting out and competing in trials, and being in remote places. Have not damaged the balance pipe, nor had any real concerns about the balance pipe. IF I had serious concerns about the balance pipe I would have either protected it or removed it. However I have not done either.

Jamie - yep - your last post is right.

Walfy - it needs to go to the bottom part of the main tank as the aux tanks bottom is also quite low and you need gravity flow.

if you had a larger main tank you would have more of the main tank exposed at the bottom so lots of mounting options for the balance pipe.

with a std main tank options are limited as it sits well between the chassis rails so alot of the bottom part of the tank is covered up.

I also have a southdown rear tank guard which limits it even further, hence didnt fit it. i lose 5L or so, some splashes down the main filler cornering etc anyway. i use it as a reserve as it could always be syphoned out and fed into main tank with a funnel. Cheers
