What do you want it for?
For admin type stuff (Office, Sage etc) it'll be fine and the internet doesn't need much to run well. The only time you really need huge resources is when running games or handling huge files such as when video editing or high res design. |

apple. pricey initial investment but well worth it, had them for the last 4 years, my origional macbook pro is still going strong in the hands of my young cousin and its still fast... the air was great for travelling but had a bit of spare capital and the retina screen macbook pro is absolutely amazing.

My last two laptops have been Toshiba's, which were both great. I would have bought another except that my wife bought me a Macbook Pro as a present. It's great in terms of build quality but the Apple OS drove me mad, so I've bootcamped it with Windows 7. Basically, I've ended up with a very expensive Windows machine

I had 3 diff laptops in 4 years. Then bought a mac, had it for 4 years now, as good as the day I bought it.
Takes some adjusting at first, but you barely ever come across a mac user who would even consider going back... They just work! Pricey but will last for ever, and never feel outdated or get left behind software wise. If you're a student / know a student, you can get a discount online from apple, or from an apple store. An Apple for £1000 isn't really a fair comparison to a £400 HP laptop. If you spec up a Windows laptop so it's like for like on hardware it'd be less money than the equivalent Apple, there is a premium for Apple ownership. So in that regard, with a price comparable machine you'd get better performance from the Windows machine. But, as I said at the start, it depends what you want to do with it. No point in getting a £2k Alienware or Apple laptop just to run Word, no point getting an Apple to run Sage etc etc.

the apple is out on cost alone as its for my 10 year daughter plus I'm still a believer that pc's are the 'industry standard' in terms of office stuff, transfering music, files, pictures etc (could just be I'm out of touch tho)? |

I was out with the the other half yesterday looking for a new drier to go with her washing macine and we were in a large computor and white goods store. I thought I would have a look round and noticed something called a Tablet, wanting to know what it was I got one of the assistants to explain, I thought about buying one for use in the caravan until he started telling me I would need a 3 Wifi thing that would give me coverage all over the world as 3 Wifi is from a satellite and not masts
Now I admit that I'm old but I'm not green. Walked out not even buying her a drier. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

we've just bought a couple of laptops from these guys ...

The Lenovo Thinkpad Twist is a handy bit of kit. Windows 8, touch screen, flip screen, ideal for out of office stuff.

i understand about the cost, but Pc's are not the industry standard anymore. Good luck with whatever you decide. You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

Mac's may be a high initial outlay, but they dont need replacing every couple of years and they just don't get slower and slower the more you use them. I'm went for PC to Mac about 5 years ago and have not regretted it al all, In that period my Mrs has got through 2 PC's and the current one is grinding towards a slow death. So in the long run I believe that Mac's are actually cheaper. Most software is available for both Mac & PC and if it isn't then you can run VMware to run a virtual PC on the Mac, which easily shares hardware & files between them. And cost-wise don't forget that iWork (apple equivalent of office) is £45 compared to £150+ for MS office, you won't need antivirus software, and you will replace it 3/4 times less often. They pay for themselves in my opinion. Once you go mac, you never go back  Cheers, David
