High Level Rear Brake Light on MOT
Hi Guys

Wondering if you'd know whether a high level rear brake light not working would cause an MOT failure?

The bulb is fine - looks like the edging strip inside the door that carries the electric current is corroded. Had a chap try to fix it with some special gunk but no joy. He suggetsed a new rear window - which seems a touch OTT

Thanks

That is 50:50, will depend on the inspector.

A high level brake light isn't needed for an MOT (same as reverse light).....but as with the reverse light, if it has one, it has to work. Can you take it off for the test?

Oh,

if you decide to change the rear window, check your insurance as if you have glass cover it will only cost you the £50 excess to have it replaced Wink

The problem for the rear heated glass is the 3rd stop tail rubber.

probably it release rubber solvent that "eat" the heated element

Dealer changed me the rear windows two times.

Now I cutted (below) the rubber (5 on the figure) and make same sockets (where are 90° tracks curves and stop carries) for avoid contacts from the heating tracks and the rubber.

Now the problem seems solved...

Short term solution to pass the MOT - piece of wire linking the high level light with the clip at the bottom of the window.

Works fine - though it may end up in a fireball at some stage.......... Whistle

Morning all,
some advice please, my high level rear brake light not working yet again Big Cry , have already had two windows replaced under warranty (which has now run out Big Cry ) have checked bulb filament and it appears ok, taken of the fitments and checked all around the 'elements' and they also appear to be ok as in no breaks etc, checked fuses ,ok, is there something else I should be checking or could the element be broken elsewhere? is there a quick fix or does it look like another rear window replacement? thanks in advance. Cogito ergo sum

I have a brand new never fitted 12MY brake light spec rear window for sale, with the latest heater element design... will be less than a main dealer. Can have it fitted as well if needed.

Mine stopped working a while age. The cause was a short break in the element beneath the foam insert. I made a temporary repair by bridging the break with a piece of copper wire held in place by some heavy duty tape. As this is covered by the foam insert it is not visible. And as the old adage goes -Out of site out of mind-, the "temporary" repair is still in place and the high level break light is still working. The hardest part is finding the break, as it is usually about a millimetre or so. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I think you will find that if the 3rd brake light is there it must work, however if it "permanantly removed" then it will pass.Have removed one from on of our family cars some years ago and not had an issue at M.O.T time. 2005 Td5 90 XS

From 1998 the EU insist on new cars having the 3rd brake light. You might get away with removing one. GermanTÜV probably will notice and let the car fail the MOT-Test.

But on a local forum a guy wrote he simple took a lenght of common elect. wire and put it behind the window seal so you don´t see it and thus he "bridged" that broken connection. That´s more reliable and and worth an imitation in case you would have to pay yourself for a new window.
