I grind one side of the grease gun to within an inch of its life but often the grease nipples come pointing at the yoke and not out to the gap. So much for PDI and servicing care. I got a brand new front prop on the front due to the supplied shaft coming with no nipples from the factory. The new shaft was fitted ungreased and the nipples were impossible to get the gun on as they were pointing toward the yoke... Disgusting!!

Was that a warranty job?

I have no nipples on the front either, is that normal?

I only have 2 on the back. It also looks like the front and back shafts are solid, is that normal? Should they not slide to compensate articulation?

Timely post.
My task on Sunday morning will be trying to grease my props.
I have a larger standard gun and a Hilka singe handed gun.
I just hope I don't have to drop the props, they were last greased [I assume] 9 months ago at the annual service but since then they have covered about 7k miles mainly fast roads, they feel fine but I would rather know they have too much grease rather than too little. BM52

While I was in my local dealer yesterday for a final warranty fix I chatted to a Technician re the props and he advised that it is easier to use a flexible hose, thankfully already attached to the Hilka.

I found that the Tbox ends of the props, as the Technician suggested, are reached from above as the yokes are more open that way and the axle ends from underneath.

Once I had the above in line it was a quick and easy job.

Mind you I am not convinced that the props had been greased for a while. I put in about one and a half cartridges of grease between them all?

Hope the above helps. BM52

Should only require a couple of pumps per UJ. You'll hear the grease 'crack' the seals.

I ground down the end of my grease gun so that it would fit easier between the yokes of the UJ. Now it's a million times easier to grease them as I don't have to worry so much about the position of the thing. Flexible ends are a nightmare I found as you need three hands - one to hold the nozzle on to the nipple (depending on the quality of the fitting, the nipple and the closeness of the fit they can be a pain for popping off) and two to operate the gun. If you have a one-handed gun you'd probably get away with it.

I'll stick my neck out here...........I've had 200tdi's, Discovery's and now a 2002 Td5 110 sw. I can say hand on heart that I've not struggled with my "agricultural" flexi grease gun to grease any propshaft nipple, jack up a wheel, get under, rotate the shaft to a point where the gun end goes on and give a couple of pumps 'till I hear the crack of the seal. Jobs a good 'un.

Seriously? How big are your cartridges? Sounds like alot of grease - I'm assuming the most went into the sliding spline nipples?

Gonna (slightly) hi-jack this thread ’cos I don’t service my truck myself…

On the other hand, I do maintain my “baby”, which needs its sliding pillar front suspension greased every 1,000 miles (yes, really), and not with LM grease either, but the proper black ’orrible Moly stuff that gets everywhere. And more often than not more grease ends up around the Zerk than in it.

I replaced my old trusty Tecalemit with a Machine Mart “Best Classic Car Recommended” one, no better really…

Which model grease gun do you guys actually use? The Stephens (Midlands) link looks as though it might be useful.

I bought this Hilka, not from this site though and the flexi head clips on and stays on.

Note these cartridges are a bit smaller.

I found that I needed about 8-10 pumps before the 'crack'.

I will now grease them every 6 months in line with the oil change.

I decided that the easiest way to do them was jack up each end, use axle stands with the other wheels well chocked and t/box in neutral and handbrake off so that I could easily turn the props. It was all very easy. BM52

Fairly sure it’s standard to have two on the front for both boys and girls. Hope that helps..

When I went to do mine I found one of the prop shaft nipples simply wouldn’t take grease, i was going to go back under and prod it a bit. Anyone ever seen that?

A very common problem if lubrication has been neglected. There are impact devices available which may clear the problem (these are good https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000GTHHNS/ref...in_title), sometimes a new nipple can solve the problem, more often stripping and cleaning the bearings and passages in the uj is necessary (which generally reveals that a new uj is needed by this stage anyway).

The clearance tool looks cool but not worth it for my one off. I’m going to spin it to the top and fill it with plus gas then see if it clears. If it doesn’t clear then I guess it’s it’s time to die.

I have one of these Wanner guns. It's a bit of a pain to fill but it is easy to use one handed which is a great for doing things on the land rover, including the props.

I know they are old, but sometimes I feel the older gear is good quality.
