So i have a '10 2.4 tdci 110 as many will know.
We get our diesel from a tank at our house, and after a delivery of fuel into tank at house cr*p was stirred up and got into my tank and also my dads. (begin problems.....) Dad has a 4.2 land cruiser amazon (AUTO) and we both had similar (isn) problems. - lack of power at anything over tick over - generally rough sounding engine i (not dad) had some extra problems: - stalling when in neutral at tick over (guess dads v8 diesel has enough momentum & cylinders to ride it out) - very lumpy delivery of power (i shall elaborate: when you put into gear it runs well with normal levels of torque at tick over, but when you put foot down have NO power - can barely increase speed at all. only way to accelerate is to change up a gear and let anti-stall do its thing (only works up to about 25)) - every so often, full power comes back and i remember that through the gears my car should actually pull well! What we've done: we have both changed fuel filters twice and dads is sorted, but mine is still (intermittently) struggling but its very bad at least 50/60% of the time. Its as though the engine is going into limp mode. Fuel is now clean, brand new (+primed) fuel filter fitted. (the old filter was fitted for 3-4 days and when i changed it, the contents was like gravy!) could; a) i be fitting the filters wrong? air in system? they seem ok and dont leak but maybe thats the first thing to check? b) the engine be going into 'limp mode' because it THINKS theres still a problem? c) there be some other problem? any advice would be MUCH appreciated! The filter is a fairly expensive (Ł25) MANN filters part. Seems to fit well. Cheers, David

Make sure you're using genuine filters. Have you tried flushing the fuel system? Drained your fuel tank to remove any sediment?
Also, what exactly was the contaminant that was stirred up? Just general silt, or something more serious like metal coming from the delivery vehicle/hose? An engine to TDi for! "Land Rover- Proudly turning drivers into mechanics since 1948" |

I could be wrong but I don't feel like it's the fuel filter anymore.
The 'contaminant' was just mucky sludge from the bottom of the tank. Tank now has a filter on it, have emptied and re-filled tank twice and put some REDEX injector cleaner in. It's as though the car thinks it has a problem and is going into limp mode.. But I'm not sure? What is limp mode like in a tdci defender? As described above? I've no experience with limp mode on the 2.4's to be honest, but if it is that and it can't be self diagnosed, then it may be a trip to the stealers for a plug in! An engine to TDi for!

Could it be contaminated diesel that got delivered? Would it be worth putting a sample into a clear glass beaker and see how it settles over night? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I've been using an 1100 litre storage tank for road diesel in the shed for years and I never had any problems.
My 2008 Puma has a non Land Rover fuel filter fitted, it is a Stenadyne (someone said on here that they make the Land Rover filter). My diesel storage tank has been filled many times and I never had any bother with sediment. It is not fitted with any type of inline filtration. The diesel comes straight from the tank through the hose into the Land Rover. If you get a fill up to the tank let it settle for a while before filling your Land Rover from it. Do you have a slight back slope on the tank? As the tank outlet is a well above the bottom of the tank, sediment should not be a problem. Get your supplier to drain your tank for you. He will back suck the diesel, and if sediment is present that will be sucked up too. You will be left with a totally clean tank. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

We know there was cr*p in the tank, it's not been cleaned for 10+ years! Getting cleaned out ASAP, fuel is now fine as our RR and land cruiser are both running smoothly and have been getting fuel from the same place.
I'll drop into guy salmon tomorrow and see if they can advise, just didn't know if anyone had experienced similar symptoms. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

I've been using my diesel storage tank for over 10 years too. It has never been drained or cleaned either. A qiuck check with a flash light when the level is low is my only monitoring! I suppose if you are O.K. now you could get the tank drained and cleaned at 5 yearly intervals for peace of mind. As I never had bother in all these years and have no filter on mine, you must have received more than one bad batch of diesel. Next time you get a fillup look into it using a flashlamp after it has settled. Maybe your supplier does not change the filters on the truck as often as he should. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Hmmm...
Land rover technician thinks fuel line needs bleeding. Quite common apparently since the tdci has no auto-bleed feature (great F'ing idea that was you idiots at ford) Tried to pump fuel through lines and out at the engine end before with a hand pump like on outboard engines, to no avail. Starting to doubt everything now, very frustrated. And I know that a main dealer will insist on a ridiculous (and expensive) list of things to be changed/replaced. Why can't there just be a hand pump like in EVERY SINGLE OTHER CAR EVER which doesn't auto bleed!? Really need someone who knows what they're doing, which seems to be very uncommon nowadays. Useless design combined with ineptitude at dealerships... Very frustrated as I sit here. Car will run but pours out smoke and stalls all the time. I'm afraid I'm 99.9999% sure it's not he filter, have put 2 different brand new filters in.
Engine runs ok at first, then deteriorates. When check filter after, it's usually only half full or so. It's as though the engine is unable to pull new fuel into and through the filter. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

That sounds more like it is sucking air in from somewhere. Are you sure it is seated correctly and tightened up. Have you made sure there is no contaminant on the seal surfaces. I had the same problem years ago so installed two fuel filters and bowls on the storage tank. Never had the problem since.
