Have I too much transmission wear.........
My lovely 110 td5 (120k miles) suffers from a terrible "thump" when taking up drive.

I have changed the rear drive flanges, the rear bushes and changed the propshaft yesterday as this had a fair amount of play in the splines and the yokes. It has definitely improved but the thump is still there and in is excessive.

It has always been there and was hoping that I could engineer most of it out as I knew from previous vehicles that a bit of wear in all the transmission components can add to up to a vehicle that is very unpleasant to drive. I have had a crowbar on the A frame ball joint and there doesnt seem to be any play in it?

When I changed the propshaft I chocked the wheels and putting it in first gear decided to see how much wear was in it. Seems like a fair bit to me, see what you think.........

This is the rear diff play and it doesnt seem that bad?

Opinions please!

Dave

I dont think i am seeing too much of a problem in those two videos, have a look at the ball joint on the top of the axle, this could give the symptoms you describe

Neither of those items have that much play, what about the front axle?

What is the best way to test the front axle. There is a hell of a whine from what I think is the front

First is to check the drive flange on the diff, exactly the same as you did to the rear in your video.

Why only change rear drive flanges, not all four? Front ones ok?

I find these clonks are an accumulation of many warn items, most of the time.

would jacking one front wheel off the floor do the trick?

Best would be to remove front prop, check joints on that, then check front axle drive flange.

I forgot to mention that the front propshaft was recently renewed not long before i bought the vehicle, so it should be ok

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. After discussion with a mate we have been thinking along the same lines despite not finding any visible wear in the ball joint.

I spoke to Ashcroft and they looked at the video I had taken and they thought that the amount of wear was minimal.

Thanks again,

Dave

Hello, just changed the flanges and one semiaxle on the rear and the clunk noise is totally gone.

I lifted one wheel and found that the tyre move 2-3 inches before it locked.

Hope it works for you. Augusto

I'd already changed the flanges on the back although I did notice that the ones on the front aren't great either and will change them when I get the chance
