Patriot roofrack
Hi all
Question for anyone out there with a 110 patriot roofrack, are they as quiet as they claim to be? As I'm looking at buying one for my 110.
Cheers

I would say they are quiet as I haven't really noticed the noise difference between the 110 with a patriot on and the 90 with nothing on.
But then it might be I ave my music too loud Very Happy

If you decide you want one, give Bren a shout as we sell them and he will probably be able to give you advice

Regards
Barbara

Don't know about the noise but having had a good look at the 110 one at Billing I would say they are an excellent, solid made bit of kit. Very solid and lots of modular add ons which are easily available as they are......

MADE IN THE UK !!

Nice in plain ali finish and can also be powder coated as well as having the visible frame bits anodised (might take a bit of arm twisting).

Also I thought quite well priced for what they are.

I used to have a patriot for my 110, very good quality, quiet and very strong but also very heavy (60kgs). They are considerably more heavy duty than the rest of the land rover apart from the chassis. I sold as I didnt want the extra weight up there all the time and the extra height can be a problem.

I now use roof bars as and when needed, better solution for me.

Can't say I've noticed 'noise' due to the roofrack as the noise from the RAI is quite high.

The Patriot ROOFRACKS and Parts are IMHO the best on the market although I haven't seen the GMB one in the flesh yet which does look very aerodynamic which should help with noise if any.

I have found the Patriot exceptionally strong and the weight no problem. The finish, whether powder coated or plain is exceptional. On the whole, good value for money.

Unfortunately, there are one or two problems......one is that the stainless steel screws/bolts react with the alloy. This causes a sort of acidic 'run' when it rains and over a period of time this drips onto the Defender roof and down the sides which causes discolouring of the paintwork. This also causes the bolt to fuse with the frame which as they are stainless steel and week causes the head to bur when using an Allen key. This results in having to drill them out and use a screw extractor.

The other problem and the one that unfortunately for Hogarth(makers of the Patriot Roofrack) is not their fault, but one of Land Rovers. The ROOFRACKS is so strong and made to such precise tolerances that if laid on a perfectly flat surface would give a nicely spread load over the rail bars and this is where the problem lies. These sit in the gutters either side of the roof which are full(???) of sealant. Due to Landrovers quality assembly and manufacturing process, the thickness of the sealant changes considerably from not enough to too much along the gutters. Because the roof rack is stronger than these gutters when you secure them together and start tightening the foot brackets it causes distortion in the gutters which means the gutter is pulled away from the body and splits the pea rating sealant line causing water leaks, etc...

If you can, assemble the ROOFRACK 'on' the vehicle before tightening up. Do Not build it off vehicle, tighten it up and then lift the whole lot in one piece onto the roof. It may be more hassle, but its better than stripping the whole lot and taking your roof of to repair the distortion and leaks.

I don't mind paying a bit extra for UK made goods but the Patriot rack is a lot of money, twice the money of a Front Runner or Safety Devices for example. Are they really that good?

AndyS,

Yes, you are right. They are a lot of money, but I come from an Industry that is involved in Heavy Engineering where Structural Integrity is paramount(yeah, I know, and I've gone and got a Defender Shocked ). I spent a while trying to justify the costs when at the end of the day it is only a roofrack, but I looked at the lot and noticed with most there has been a bit of "value engineering" going on which considering how long I intended to keep it for and what loads I may put on was a no brainier. I'm not a great fan of small bent tubes or alloy box section. This is solid which gives it its weight, but also strength.

Then I went to Hogarths to see them being made and whilst they are only a small company they have some pretty impressive machinery which you just know will turn out some pretty accurate and excellent stuff.

Plus I do try and BUY BRITISH Thumbs Up unless there is no alternative.

I've been thinking about getting a patriot roof rack. My mate has one that's 10 years old and it's perfect.

Been looking at prices the patriot is £190 more than the safety devices which need re powder coating after about 5 years.

Three year old rack with several Highland winters. Needs a good clean as the Ali is tarnished but fantastic bit of kit.
