fuel breather pipe
Hi

I have a problem with that breather piep next to the main pipe used for filling the tank....
As you can see on the pics below the pipe is dry and breaking on the top. the problem is that near the fuel tank (can't see in the pics) is the same way. I end up loosing fuel. Can't have more than 60/65 ltrs in the tank or I end up loosing it...

my doubt is :
I was checking on the microcat that dgardel shared with us and the number on the diagram (page 736 - n.6) is diferent from that microcat catalogue available here http://lrparts.ru/engl/ - says its n.9 ...

can anyone tell me what is correct? maybe I'm looking it wrong?

And can anyone tell me the inside and outside diameter of that pipe? I would like to try and buy a beter one, non original...I know I can see it in mine but would not like to remove it before I have the new one...
Thanks Thumbs Up Regards
Joao

Don't know if you've still got warranty but we had problems in that area and warranty paid for the repair.

Mine has done that too, stops me spending too much on fuel Laughing

I'm sure you have thought of this - but if you have enough slack cut the end off and re-connect, then measure the off-cut

I'm out of warranty by now - 3 and half years... Sad

The problem is the access to the pipe next to fuel tank is close to none...so the fuel tank has to come out (Am I right?)... So I would like to have the parts in my hand already before starting to dismantle it all...
And I on't think that there's enough slack to do that...the lenght is the correct one, no more no less... Regards

wasnt it in some cases not the hose but rather the plastic-tube of the tank itself ?

Re: fuel breather pipe
I've checked again, but there's not much light to see there, but you're right...It could be from the tank itself (I hope not! Big Cry )...I will, however, have to replace the breather pipe anyway...

Going back to my question:

not nice! Razz

And can anyone answer my doubt? I've found two diferent part numbers for such item....

On the microcat that dgardel made available to us the part number is LR032394....on the microcat available on the internet the part number is ESR4290...

Maybe they're the same? Anyone? Regards
Joao

just did a google on both numbers ...

The LR032394 is 69.96 + VAT and the ESR4290 is 5,10 + VAT!

So must be some serious difference between the two!

the ESR one is described as a "breather tube"

and the LRO one is a "Hose - Connecting"

If you go a couple of pages further on the microcat from Dgardel you will find the same drawing/number as the Russian one ... looks to me that cheap one is just a rubber hose and the expensive one is the the hose with the one way valve breather pipe for the fuel tank included.

I can be wrong of course, just going of the technical drawings.

Id order ESR4290.

For the other part No. I get "heat shield" from a quick google search.

Neednt be wrong. It seems to happen quite often that the same part is renamed a view times as time goes by. Usually if the price changes, Ive been told.

My breather pipe is showing some cracking too, although not as bad as Joao's.... Starts to feel like a general thing, will surely mention it to my dealer at its next service in September, but it ain't leaking now, and the car still will have one more year of extended warranty.
So for now will watch how this thread develops further.... Most interesting question is if it would be possible to replace the breather pipe without taking off the fuel tank or other. I would not mind replacing it now,and then again in a few years, and on and on,..... that is if it would be not too difficult an operation, and item price is cheap enough to do preventive maintenance..... You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Taking into consideration the bespoke quality the LR-original-part tube must be made of ... Id rather think of looking at aftermarket/racing supply. Unless it is no standard size that will fit.

I think my RRC also has a breather pipe. Pretty sure no one touched it during the past 25years.
And it looks better than the 3-4year old examples shown in this thread.

What really annoys me is that a cracked part might be un-noticed by the owner when it is near to the filler. But it is in the line of fire of what the tyre throws at it. One could imagine water and dirt entering the fuel tank. "Nice" thing with a delicate injection system next to it. And furthermore no water sensor to give warning to the driver.

And BTW, I asked JLR if I may add a filter bowl and water sensor (Stanadyne; shown in a thread a few months old). I argued with the different fuel quality seen at expedition. They were very polite and understanding, but JLR just wouldnt accept any warranty claim if there has been made any modification whatsoever to the system.
See - I know there are weaknesses, JLR counts pennies on production even though people get flatbedded from it. And OTOH they dont let me put it right even though there is 0% risk to them from a technical point of view.

that's my idea...I'll try to get the piece or even buy it and measure it without opening the package...If I get an identical pipe but better, Ill return the original part.

I've been checking that with a couple of friends, but we don't seem to find out how to replace it without removing the fuel tank....we could remove the rear tube, but don't think it's a better option! Mr. Green

If anyone knows an easier way, plz let me know... Regards

United Kingdom
Buy a short length of new pipe with the same dimensions
Cut off split end of old pipe
Insert a short length of metal / pvc tube inside old pipe, clamp with jubilee clip
Push short length of new pipe over other end and clap with jubilee clip
Reconnect

Any comments?!
