Hello Martyn,

We have the Safari Equip 30l one

It 'replaces' the filler pipe and becomes ana extension of the main tank, connecting to the main tank at the bottom, where the original filler pipe connects. So when you fill up, the fuel passes through the aux tank into the main one, then when that is full the fuel will begin to fill the aux one.

Fuel is pumped from the main tank, so as the level drops in there it is gravity filled from the aux one.

We get about 85l in total in there - probably the air space at the tops of the tanks do not get filled due to the angles.

We were concerned that this method does put 'all your eggs in one basket', in the event of holing the tank or whatever, so that is why we added a underseat tank in addition - the basic LR type from up to 300tdi models. We had to move the ecu and gubbins and remove the underseat box, but for extra mileage and/or peace of mind in having 2 separate fuel supplies, worth the hassle.

As Martyn has just awoken this thread again, I may as well update y'all since re the latest stat as mpg is still edging up

29/6 - 29.08 mpg 428miles/66.93l
09/7 - 29.16 mpg 460miles/64.56l+7.15l (£10 top up)
22/7 - 29.94 mpg 446miles/67.74l

Just running the needle down to the red now, I know there are 2 gallons in the tank now when the light comes on, but paranoia ("Finished with my woman cos she couldnt help me with my mind") gets me to top up too soon Laughing

Just trying to push the tank a bit farther now to maybe 70l a fill up and 30mpg Thumbs Up He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

I average 27.5 mpg, in an almost empty,completely standard 110 H/T, partly on a motorway.My last fill up I had 31.3mpg (due to using the motorway more),I don't drive fast Cool and only do 50mph on the motoway.

just to say I've done 300 miles on the first half of this tank and did a 513 miles when the orange warning came on previously - thats about 37 mpg. Thumbs Up

from what I can gather anything over 30mpg is really good and anything over 33mpg is excellent......

its all about patience.

Er dude! Assuming it's a 110.

75litre tank = 16.3 gallon

513/16.3= 31.4 mpg

Don't know how much to reserve call it 70 litre.

70 litre=15.3 gallon

513/15.3=33.5mpg


Good going either way,but not that good!!

you might be right....... I'll have to go check. I think the light came on at 513 but I filled up sometime after that and the mpg was calculated on what fuel went back in against mileage covered at that time ie 540 miles.

and yes its a 110. Thumbs Up

I too was very concerned a while back about the MPG of my TD5 110, especially since I was just about to head off on a cross Europe tour. Since then I have been keeping a track of the MPG, driving sensibly and making sure things like tyre pressures and oil levels are exactly where they should be.

These are her stats;

Not bad for an old gal (137k miles on the clock), an average of 29mpg and a max miles per tank of 479 miles. The average is based upon 7k miles, best mpg is just short of 32mpg and an average of 19p/mile. The closest I have gone to the bottom of the tank was when I got to 460 miles and at that point I really felt I was on fumes, although the orange light was not on at that point. The lowest point was when fully laden with tent and gear in the mountains of Spain on poorish fuel, even so 26 mpg is pretty good I think... Thumbs Up

Incidentally, IMHO using the anti-stall to pull off is a moderate waste of fuel. When used the ECU reacts by dumping a lot of fuel in to the cylinders to stop it from stalling and you get a good puff of unburnt black smoke out the back. Not using it may improve your mpg a bit. :)

Apart from the trek across Spain what kind of roads do you use,motorways town center, etc? Also, I just use the clutch to get going in mine but don't get a cloud of smoke,mine is low mileage tho(49k), just lettin you know if you want to get it checked out. :thumbsup:

Pam W - excellent blog. All the stuff I want to do to my 90 when funds permit. Pretty much everyone uses a 100 (or 130) for overlanding, so great to see someone doing it in a 90. We wouldn't be going that far, but for a 2 or 3 week trip to Morocco or somewhere similar, I would feel safer with the extra fuel capacity and stuff you have done. We would be taking 2 adults and 2 children, so space really would be at a premium. It's a few years away until the children are old enough not to complain all the time, but I do hope to return to Morocco one day. (We did go two-up with jerrycans strapped to the side, covering the windows, but that's not really an option if I want to keep the children happy!)

I've bookmarked your blog, so keep the information coming.

Hi Jimbob. I do not hold back, all roads are fair game for Miffy the 110 and me... Wink

Slightly more seriously, I would consider this to be a "real world" test. On every tank of fuel there is a good quantity of country roads, motorways, town driving, fast A-roads and green lanes. The only variation really is what the 110 is hauling, this week I hauled a new project 90 on a flatbed trailer which understandably knocked the mpg back a tad.

Crikey 49k on a TD5... Shocked that is surely the lowest mileage on and TD5 still alive... Mine has now just clicked over 143k miles and to be honest she is still hauling ass, but she does get good oils and filters and regular servicing.

As it happens I am doing a little personal "Fuel Test" on the 110 at the moment. We are on to our second brand of diesel and will report back in due course with the results... Interesting so far...

It is indeed a super app. It is called "Road Trip" and I find it to be very easy to use. You can use it just to record mpg or if you are willing to add a little more information you can use it to track servicing schedules and cost of parts as well. You can run trip too, so I set it up to record my drive to Gibraltar and back and more recently to test different brands of diesel.
