my diffs have been fine.....best go check ! joking aside having had the diffs replaced I can only assume they were never the issue? reminds me of my dads disco 1. they were just about to replaced the third gearbox when mr LR (tech from factory turned up and told dealer that the noise was quite normal) - I presume it was cos the noise never got any worse in the c10 years my dad had it and never caused a problem I can't really help I'm afraid but what amazes me is when it comes to the transmission the defender is to my mind very simple yet seems to cause people no end of problems - I just can't understand it? |

Probably you are right. The dealer said that in the first diff (where the grinding noise was very very loud) there where scrapings of metal so I think living with the grinding noise is not an option. 2021 Defender 110 D300 HSE |

I think the first thing that needs changing is your dealer. Four diffs and problem not solved just does not sound right to me.

Hmmm I wonder how they "changed the angle of the prop shaft". Maybe that's more related to the problem than the rear diff. Supacat is IMHO correct:
If you were in the UK, I would suggest a trip to the gods of Land Rover transmission...Ashcroft... However, just a thought - other than the "change the angle of the propshaft" bit, could it be something completely unrelated to the diff? Does it do this in all gears or just 6th? Does it do the same at the same revs in a different gear? (i.e. is it rev related or speed related?). Is it the same if you freewheel? Next Friday there will be a specialist from LR Netherlands so I hope he can locate the problem.
At the moment the problem is only there (or audible) at higher speeds in 5th or 6th gear. With the first diff I did sometimes hear the noise in four at lower speeds but now it is only audible at 100 - 120 km/hr. The sound turns up when I suddendly let the gas pedal go up and when I press it again I can hear it also, but not as loud. It is not possible to position the pedal in a way that you keep hearing the noise so it looks that it is something related to pressure differences on the diff (or something else). 2021 Defender 110 D300 HSE |

I wondered that too. The only thing I came up with was that maybe they altered the 'phasing' of the two Hooke joints by dismantling the splined joint and reassembling in a different alignment. I wouldn't however have thought that either the shaft was incorrectly assembled beforehand, or that this would alter a "grinding" noise. The noise/accelerator relationship does indeed sound like a diff characteristic. We do know from earlier posts from Ian Ashcroft that some LR diffs are shockingly badly set up, perhaps this has a bearing (no pun intended) on the problem. If it was my 130 I'd be very tempted to go for one of the new Aschroft HD long-nose diffs. |

Well, the expert of LR Netherlands said that is was not the rear diff but the transfer-case. They have put sensors under the car to locate the source of the grinding and now it should be the transfer-case. The story is that the transfer-case had to adjust to the new rear diff and that is what is making te sound. Nothing to worry about, it should be quite normal. When the grinding sound becomes louder they will have to look at the transfer-case but for now it should be fine.
The first diff which was replaced was really broken but if it was neccessary to replace it again and again? Lots if questions but no satisfying answer from the dealer. 2021 Defender 110 D300 HSE |

Someone really is blowing smoke...if anything in the transfer case can self adjust then it's already loose/broken! I think they are using an excuse they use on the auto boxed models where the software does adjust to various inputs over time and can be re-set as and when required. For a manual Defender this is not true. Go back and tell them you would like another lucky dip from the big book of excuses... |
