Since all the Genevois are posting on this thread, I thought I might do a little hijack and ask if anyone can recommend some gentle tracks in the Chamonix area as it's less than an hour from Geneva? I have found a few mentions of 4x4 tracks on mountain biking web sites but nothing from a 4x4 perspective.

Will have the wife with me so don't want to get cross-axled etc. Just a gentle path and perhaps go for a stroll when we reach the top. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

the only ones we used to do were at Biere (talk to Bob at FreddyMarine) and the barrage near lac emosson where you can take a walk along the top of a barrage

Did anyone manage to source anything? I've been searching the Jura and Alsace regions for the last couple of dazs but haven't had any luck yet. Anyone else got any info that might help? Cheers

I think there is no real translation for the term "green laning" into Français de Suisse, Switzerdeutsch, Svizzero Italiano, or into Romansh, and therefore the Swiss do not "encourage" these practices. Cool
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

You are right there Eric. Green Laning is strictly forbidden in Swiss, Germany & Austria. France are Italy are OK. I've spent the last month or so trawling though forums and maps looking for some green lanes in the Jura, Rhone Alps and Alsace regions but with very little luck. Seems that the people who have some roadbooks for these regions only want to exchange roadbooks, not share them. Being a newbie I don't have any so will keep searching

So far I've discovered this 4x4 club http://www.alsace-off-road.fr/topic/index.html in Steinbourg, about 3 hour drive from Zurich. They have a decent track and probably also more info on the local region.

Will keep yous posted on my progress and if I come across anything

And don't forget that Switzerland has mandatory headlights on at all times now, since 01 Jan with fines from 01 March.
I admit that in my TD5 over here in Graubunden I tend to use sidelights only, but strictly speaking that is illegal and I could be fined. Foreign plates, they probably wouldn't bother but I recommend sidelights at least. Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz

- Daytime Running Lights are fine, if you have them. (Front only back / numberplate is not required)
-- If not, you have to switch on low beam lights.
----Fog lights are not permitted as replacement for DRL

Also, while as you all know .ch is a weird cantonal set up, this is a global rule for all of .ch,
BUT the enforcement of it is cantonal.. that is some cantons may well disburse tourists of a few bucks as a nice easy way to top up the impoverished Swiss coffers.
And anecdotally some have been fining since 01 Jan but I have no first hand proof.

Drive... with your wallet in mind! Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz

^^ In Canton de Geneve the Police sofar are not really giving any fines for driving without DRL or in absence of those without low beam.

Contrary to the Canton de Berne where the Police use a zero tolerance for this. Ordnung muss sein, selbstverständlich. Rolling Eyes

See below artice with comparison between Cantons which just appeared in our local newspaper.
