You only need one you know, or in fact none at all because the famous €13.00 fine for that has been put in the fridge by the french authorities for now. But if you want to be fully compliant with this contradictory law, make sure that the expiry date of that chemical thing is still good. More importantly, make sure you stay strictly within speed limits everywhere in France, because the speed cameras there have popped up like mushrooms everywhere and at the least expected places first! La gendarmerie also invented a new sport from hiding with mobile speed guns behind bushes, bridges, etc...... The French are in dire need of more tax income, so they get it where they can these days. Breathalysers are not need in Switzerland and no longer required in France. The French law is pending. I don't know about Italy. I will be in Brittany as of Monday and until the 4th of August, but will be round this weekend if you are heading up to the Dole |

I can only agree with Eric on the speeding in France. On my last trip to Bordeaux, I managed to get flashed twice from I don't know where. I was only 10Kmh over so the fine is 90€ on the spot and 45€ by mail payable by visa. They seem to target foreign plates for on the spot checks. It is quick cash.

Believe me, you don't want to do it in France anymore either. And the french gendarmes with their hand held speed guns won't appear on your satnav..... When speeding in France today, you better tune your radio to "Money" by Pink Floyd. You never actually own a Defender. No, your satnav is not going to help. You need a mini coyote:

In Switzerland now, in Andermatt, at the bottom of the furka pass. 6 nights in the oztent with mrs Tack and baby Tack, decided to make it a long day and crash at a hotel instead of camping. Off to zermatt tmw, will go up on the mountain train to the observatory and might do the car train up the furka pass as never done that before ( except eurotunnel, that don't count )
Pyrenees mid sept too, with family tack We got stopped by the French rossers near Metz, all ok and we had no breathalyser on board despite the change of law, they did ask, but was not a problem.... Got stopped in Austria too today, how your luck! Both times were just curious enquiry, no law breaking... |

Garmin actually do it very smart. They are having different procedures country by country depending on what the local law permits or not.
With my latest map update that means for instance that my Garmin... ... shows nothing for Switzerland as to speed camera positions ... shows for France a red bar warning that we enter "a danger zone" and this from about 1km before a speed camera. ... shows for Belgium the actual location of speed cameras and calls them so by name, because the law must allow that. Think Garmin will constantly adapt to new laws as they change,,,,, Pretty good and worth being able to update all of Europe maps every three months You never actually own a Defender. Eric - good to know... I'll plug it in and see what happens, in the UK it tells me where the fixed cameras are and the locations of the mobile ones (whether they are there or not)
the dezl760 is going well, really helps with my expenses too, you can down load a csv into excel and all the work is done |

Since all the Genevois are posting on this thread, I thought I might do a little hijack and ask if anyone can recommend some gentle tracks in the Chamonix area as it's less than an hour from Geneva? I have found a few mentions of 4x4 tracks on mountain biking web sites but nothing from a 4x4 perspective.
Will have the wife with me so don't want to get cross-axled etc. Just a gentle path and perhaps go for a stroll when we reach the top. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. |
