Anti-stall works in all gears in both high and low, it doesn't however mean that you cannot stall the vehicle!

Idle jack works in low first only.

I've just driven the car up onto ramps in the normal box, first gear. It just rolled up the ramps no problem and no throttle. I guessed that was anti-stall doing it's thing?

I use anti-stall all the time to hi for pulling away. Saves reaching for the handbrake on hills and means I can pull away anywhere without over-revving.

You can also feel it in higher gears when breaking to slow down, and then right when I should dip the clutch, the engine accelerates to overcome the breaking.

I think there's something like idle jack working when in hi range too. You know when you've been running in low range, and then maybe a second after stopping you'll notice the engine revs drop as idle jack switches off? I've also noticed it when moving in traffic in high, then putting the gearbox into neutral (so no engine breaking), and just using the brakes to come to a halt. When the wheels stop turning, the revs drop by a small amount.

Yes, the revs are held slightly higher when the vehicle is moveing, but I forget now the technical reason for this. This is independent of the idle jack, however, which is specifically to avoid loss-of-control when descending steep loose hills in low first when without the idle jack the engine braking would be excessive.

2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Keswick Green
Last week I drove in the beach side road with heavy sand with my 110 puma SW. First I used high range with diff locked at 1st gear and the car stalled few times under heavy sand. But when i used low range diff locked at 1st gear the car did not stall but i felt the engine revs too much to keep the momentum. I do not know this is something to do with anti stall?

What would be the most appropriate gear selection for puma engines on heavy sand tracks? Guys i need your opinion. Cheers. Appreciate!

Is that the anti-stall? I recall my Dad's diesel Peugeot 505 pulling away quite happily with no throttle. 2009 110 XS Station Wagon

Pretty sure it's working, even though the low rev torque is good on these engines. Works on the steepest of hills, and will even pull away in 2nd or higher, not that it would make the clutch too happy.

Keep your foot on the brake and you'll see the engine revs trying to overcome it.

If you can launch from a solid, try 3th low gear and enter at speed.
From soft ground, build up speed slowly or you'll dig yourself in.
When you loose momentum, de-clutch BEFORE you stand still or you will get stuck, continue with low first until you feel you can gear higher or you have a better footing.

Next time experiment a bit, soft sand is fun but tricky to drive on.

Also isn't it an advantage of using low range with 3rd gear to engage the anti stall (according to forum members)?

Also I have seen some forum members have suggested that without diff lock engaged the defenders drive easy on sand?

Can Idle jack be removed, its a little to quick in reverse low when reversing in to tight places ?

I have a swedish instruction book and dont understand it. "Rafiki" 2007 110 STW - Rolling rebuild.
