Is the steering motor showing any signs of leaks etc?
Pop it in to your local independant, take him for a spin and ask their opinion perhaps? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

check these things....
1.) is your power steering resevoir topped up? 2.) is the drive belt for your power steering tightened properly? once youve done that then look for something more serious. ive had exactly those symptons, especially after off roading in the mud. |

My PAS groans quite a lot at the moment, I had a leak on the pump which has taken a couple of attempts to stop(it was the prssure pipe, an 'O' ring but when I undid it to replace it had cracked the seal on the adapter piece between it and the pump) I bled the system, bleed nipple on top of steering box, but the pump kept weeping and it needs to be done again. Make sure the fluid level is good and when running, especially from cold is there froth being churned around in the reservoir? Mine does as I know that more air has entered the system and a further blled is needed, this time I'll enlist the assistance of younger son as it's hard to hold the steering wheel in the right position and operate a spanner on the bleed nipple!
Vibration under acceleration? Fravourites to check is play in propshaft universal joints. If you are convinced that it's coming from a wheel then CV joints on front, wheel bearings......there are a few possibilities. Good luck  |

Had a look at the PAS today and noticed that there's a fair bit of oil leaching out from around the top of the casing where the drive shaft enters it. Also checked the reservoir and its just at the low level so ill top it up and have a closer look at the seal and try bleeding the system though I didn't notice any froth in the reservoir after a tootle into town this morning. I'm in the middle of servicing the old gal so ill check the prop uv's and so on as I go.

groaning at low revs is most likley to be low fluid, worn PAS pump or a leak, assuming no other factors are putting extra force limiting the wheels from turning freely.

Hi guys, sorry its been a while since updating. I've not got round to sorting this issue yet but it was picked up on in the MOT this month as an advisory. I've been doing some reading and my first port of call is to check the level of the steering fluid (as suggested)and then bleed the system using the bleed nipple on top of the steering box. I'll also check the on hard rod bushes as suggested. One interesting thing I noted at the MOT was that when The front end was jacked and the lock to lock checked there seemed to be a lot of vibration on the wheels when returning the steering from left to right lock. I asked the guy what he though and he was cagey into providing an answer.

Well I've started with the basics;
No play in the drop arm/ drag link ball joints No play in the track rod ball joints Topped up the PAS res so its between the low and high marks, will monitor level over the next few days Bled PAS system via steering box bleed nipple, all good. There's a tiny bit of play in the steering column UJ but I don't think this is causing any groaning and there's not a huge amount of free play between the steering wheel and column. Now, the steering box…there's a leak evident where the steering column enters the top of the box. The next port of call will be to see if there's play in the steering box. There isn't any signs of the level dropping dramatically in the reservoir. So short of the steering box being at fault I'm open to any ideas you might have! Maybe the pump? But sounds like a groan and is felt through the steering wheel. Again the symptoms are groaning at low speeds or when stationary when Turing the wheel and when jacked up the wheels judder when turning left to right lock. Any help greatly appreciated!  |

Honestly, my Td5 did that when i turned left from new.
If i'm turning the steering when parking, ie low speed, it will groan. but when turning right, it's ok. another Td5 in the club also did that as well, so i guess it hasn't been giving problems for over 10yrs so i'd say sometimes they are just like that. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At �125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island. |
