Td5 gearbox ratios
Hi,

Been lurking around here a while, and I have a question about the gearbox ratio on my '03 110 hardtop.

Quick overview of the truck - I bought it as a CatD, ex-EON power company 'utility spec' with 12k on the clock in 2005, I've rebuilt and repaired it, and then modified it (gently) to suit my requirements. In 2008 I contacted the heritage department at Landrover and obtained the original build spec sheet - some adverts list the utility spec versions as being built by LRSV........but apparently mine was not Sad

The build sheet lists (amongst lots of other stuff) the following, can anyone confirm if these are standard fitment on all 110's:

Heavy duty axles 3500kg
Heavy duty suspension
120amp alternator
Uprated transmission
Ratio 1410
Gearbox Ratio Group No.2
Heavy duty clutch

What I'd really like to know is if the gearbox ratio is standard, as although the truck pulls like a train through 1st, 2nd and 3rd, when I get up to about 60mph it completely runs out of steam - the only engine mods I've done are to remove the EGR valve, and fit a safari snorkel (fitted because the 2nd hand wing I fitted had the holes for it.......)

Many thanks,

I believe 1.410 are usually standard on all Defenders, but can be replaced by the 1.222 gear ratios as came fitted to Disco's.

I had a similar issue (in that my TD5 felt limited to 60-65), and it turned out to be a stuck wastgate.
I didnt notice any difference in the low gears, but on the dual carrigeway/any hills it was definately down on power.

Easy to check and usually to rectify (with a lot of patience and WD40 Thumbs Up ).

Thanks to IRBdevelopments for the video Thumbs Up

Checked the wastegate a couple of weeks ago after seeing that thread !

It really feels like a gear ratio 'issue', almost like a 6th gear is needed......which is why I'm wondering what the 'gearbox ratio group No.2' on the build sheet refers to. Td5 110 HD Hardtop.......not quite standard Smile

Some were fitted with 1.6 trans boxes, so have no top end speed at all. Do you have a rev counter? Could mop are revs per speed

No rev counter, but I do have a Mk1 Nanocom (which I think shows the RPM ?)

Oh, and the transfer box is stamped 1.411 Td5 110 HD Hardtop.......not quite standard Smile

1.4 is a standard ratio. I don't think the gearbox ever changed on the td5 ratios. I hav just changed mine to a 1.2 from a disco and can now cruise at 70 however lost some of the pulling capacity. I would recommend this mod especially if your not towing heavy

The things that seem strange about your build sheet, are:

All Td5's have a 120amp alternator as standard

and they have 1.4:1 t/box (defenders, that is)

and I didn't think there was a HD clutch for Td5... certainly not shown in microCAT

Uprated transmission could well be 4pin front diff to suit the "HD axles" (which also had vented discs, but I think most 110's had that anyway on the front)

I must admit to taking the original build specs with a pinch of salt, there is a web page that you can source your original build specs if you put in your VIN number, I can't remember where but I put mine in and it told me that mine has air con, not a chance. It is not supposed to have abs or traction control but it does, the one thing it does get right is the colour so all that I got from my looking at it was the build date which was about three months before its registration date which are on the V5 anyway Rolling Eyes

Floor it in a lower gear and see what you get, you should be able to do 55ish before hitting the limiter in 3rd with standard gearing. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"
