Hi all
I have an 1984 110 with a Rover V8 and SU carbs. Everything is actually running well since I put the electronic ignition and new coil in last fall. I know that my compression is low (80-90psi - book says min should be 135) and I have a rebuild in my future. Now when I am slowing down and just getting to idle coming up to a stop sign she wants to (and does) stall. If I do a quick blib of the gas pedal it seems to correct it and then it idles fine. Any ideas? Cheers Tim Series II in pieces 1984 Defender 110 (3.5l V8 now 300TDI) |

This is taking me back years, it's a long time since I've had anything to do with petrols. It could be the pipe controlling the advance/retard on the distributor body. Or something within the mechanism of the vacuum advance/retard system. It may be that the ignition pack (goes in place of the points?) may be impeeding the movement of the plate in the distributor.

Just before you stop, push the clutch down.

Ahhh. Not sure if that was meant to be funny or not? Yes. In neutral it stalls (or tries to) as I am coming to a stop Tim Series II in pieces 1984 Defender 110 (3.5l V8 now 300TDI) |

As I said above it's either the vacuum advance/retard system on the ignition not compensating for the load change on the engine or it is petrol starvation, check fuel flow, tick over speed may be a bit low but if the carb is good I would veer more towards an ignition problem.

I agree with JWL, there is a little capsule assembly on the side of the base of your distributor with a small rubber pipe coming off it. I would check the pipe isn't holed, blocked or perished and also check the diaphragm in the capsule itself is intact. You can do this by gently blowing down the disconnected pipe and seeing if it holds pressure and with the distributor cap off see if the plate moves within.
On my old 3.9 the pipe was cracked. Hope you get it sorted and it's an easy fix! ![]() Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Thanks guys. Ill check the vac advance/retard when I get a chance. I just changed the hoses last fall but ill check this first, along with the capsule assembly

OK. So I actually had some time to look at things this weekend. The plate that the electronic ignition sits on had come out of its holder and was not attached to the vacuum advance conections. I didnt get time for a good drive today but i suspect this was the problem. Will report back later once I have had a chance to drive her
