Lost all drive...
I was driving home yesterday and suddenly lost all drive in my 09 110. Locking the diff didn't help so presume the props hafts are okay. Clutch pedal didn't drop to the floor but I can put it into gear with the engine on without the clutch. Only a slight whirring sound comes from the gearbox/clutch.

There wasn't any slipping gears or odd noises before it happened.

It's been recovered to my local indy LR garage and they'll look to see what's gone bang (my wallet I think...) next week.

Has anyone experienced the same before, and if so, what was the cause? Gearbox, clutch, Tbox?

Mike

Not to accuse you of being daft, but the hi-low lever isn't in neutral is it?

Might just be the linkage has come apart, or do you know for sure it hasn't slipped to neutral...?

Just grasping at straws for you.... Crying or Very sad

Cheers

Happened to me with a 200 tdi but that was a different gearbox and had a problem in the early days due to the mainshaft wearing due to lack of lubrication. As the Puma has a different gearbox this will not be your case. I too would suggest that the transfer lever has shifted knocking you into neutral land. Unlike earlier Defenders the transfer lever can be moved very easily and it does not have to travel far to get into neutral or indeed low range. Any luck, this will be your "problem". Adaptor shaft spline failure between main and transfer boxes. Reasonably common problem.

Can this be checked without major dis-assembly?

Probably not that easily, I would think it is more a process of elimination.

Perhaps someone on here who's actually had this failure could comment?

Hi Keith

Having suffered the adaptor shaft failure on the 110 DC I can say it is not easily checked. You need to remove the transfer box (at least) to get to the shaft.

When mine went it was not a total loss of drive, just the noise of all the spanners being thrown around the transfer/gearbox that was the clue !

The shaft was .... shafted when it came out, all the splines on one end had been ground down to almost nothing.
I guess that eventually I would have lost all drive but the horrendous noise of it slowly disintegrating will certainly warn you that there is a problem.

Bob

That is what used to happen to the shaft on the 200 tdi. It was put down to lack of lubrication and a modification was made to improve the lubrication.
Is the Puma gearbox going to suffer the same problem? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I saw the destroyed shaft when it was removed and it certainly didn't look like lack of lubrication.

Probably the shaft was not up to the job ??

Thanks Bob,

IIRC yours was fairly new when it went west so hopefully rogue units rather than wear and tear that was a feature on the LT77 boxes.

Hopefully as I'm on about 85k mines OK - I'm just a bit nervous of drive line 'shunt' knocks and noises!

About 10K on the clock when it went Keith.

It was like an on/off switch when it went, came home one evening and it was fine then within a mile of leaving home the next morning it went, no warning before at all.

All fixed now. It was the adaptor shaft - exactly the same as happened to Bob. The gearbox end had worn most of its splines away, as had the part it fits into on the gearbox shaft. Clutch, gearbox and Tbox were all fine and the gear change is less clunky now (surprise, surprise...)

For the record my 110 has only done 34k miles.
