Puma transmission rattle
Hi guys,

Hope you can help me out. My 09 puma has 100 000ks on the clock and has suddenly sprung a rattle in the transmission.(I think) it is evident when accelerating from 100 to 120 plus. It's not a clutch rattle its more like a pinging sound that goes away when below 90ks/hr.

Has anybody experienced anything similar? She's out of warranty so at this stage I'm scared to think of the bills I'm faced with.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Andrea

Puma transmission rattle
I have gone through that post but my issue seems different. My engine is 100 percent, I have been to the dealers and we put earmuffs on the transmission, and the engine, it was definitely coming from the transmission.

It seems like a tinging noise and as I say under ever other condition it runs perfectly, as soon as you get to 100 ks an hour it starts and is there until you reduce speed to under 100, regardless of weather the clutch is in or out??? Some say its the transfer box...

that doesn't sound like the clutch, more something in the gearbox or t-box maybe? --

Naks, I wonder if you can help me with my EGR. (By the way, have taken the Landy to gearbox company in JHB, they seem very jacked its going on Monday to get sorted.)

Back to EGR. Wher is this located in the engine bay? What are the benefits of removing it? Mine is extremely quite on the self clean cycle but wondered if perhaps I would be doing my engine good by removing it? I have a big fiishing boat weighing in at around 3.4 tones that I tow quite often through the thick sands of Mozambique, so my motor labour quite a bit. Are there any negative side effects to removing the EGR, ?..

Secondly with regard to the exhaust system should I decat it, and also change that 250 gallon drum of a silencer?? I also use it everyday so don't want to make so loud that I can't bare it?

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but trying to find posts here is becoming difficult;)

Cheers,
Andrea

Andrea,

The EGR is by the intake manifold, have look in the Workshop Manual: http://www.mediafire.com/?6vfad0z0bzso7`

By removing/disabling it you will lower fuel consumption and prevent your intake manifold from getting gunked up with carbon over time. There are no negative effects to this.

If you tow a lot, my advice would be to get a remap from a reputable tuner: BAS or Alive here, or in you want a Joburg-based tuner, TorqTune or Turbochip. After that get a bigger intercooler, and you will be towing much more efficiently.

I would suggest you drill out the cat first, helps the turbo spool up quicker. --

Thanks for the info. I'll take it to them to give me a quote, otherwise can I do it myself??

I have already installed the upgraded inter cooler, it was a different machine after that. I will now investigate removing my EGR. Can one do it as a DIY?

On my 110 200 tdi I used get a tinny rattle from underneath. It turned out to be a small heatshield on the exhaust hitting off the gearbox. There is no similar heatshield on the Puma exhaust but I'd check all the bolts on the exhaust pipe joins as a tinny sound would suggest an exhaust rattle to me.
As the transfer box is filled with oil I don't see how it could come from there. The exhaust bolts only take a few minutes to check/tighten. So if you tighten them and the sound is still there then let the dealer look at the transfer box. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Ok guys so shes back from The Gearbox Company (sean) now. I highly reccomend them to work on your landies, wow, great service and smiles all around, whilst not completly breaking the bank..

So the problem was the transfer box, as we suspected, the bearings where worn out and needed attention as well as some other niggles in there, needed adjusting andjust all round TLC, all my leaks where sorted out and the landy is running like out of the showroom, love it!!!

In SA (Joburg specifically) i highly reccomend Sean, and my P38(old girl) will be going for a gearbox overhaul soon... it deserves it by now 300 000ks later... Smile

Ill try post some pics of my shorti now!!(not sure how)
