JohnDeere's are good and hold their value. Avoid Italian models ... look good but don't work well (lawnflite i think) (The first one I had was from the USA, it was brilliant, but can't remember the name, even cut the grass well in the rain!) |

Yes I looked a few used JD and they were still looking strong money for them, this was the Husqvarna i was think of...where are they from?

I had a Countax CH600 with Honda V-Twin but it was painfully slow and drank fuel  |

Yes I can get a Kubuto for just of 5k but i think its really over kill. |

See if dealer will demo it you will find it's a great mower I was apprehensive on paying over £5K for a mower as first.
You also need to decide if you want to collect the cuttings or mulch only. If you collect then be prepared for a grass mountain if you have a large area to cut. 
Stiga with the front decks are supposed to be good and can get around trees and in awkward places. Simon |

I have a Husqvarna 260 something.... (forgot the exact letters combination).
It is a 26HP 750cc fuel motor, has a 54 inch side throwing mower deck with three knives, and I have about 8000 sqm of grass to cut, so quite a lot. Which takes me about 1.5 hours each week. Not exactly your english type of lawn like a golf green, less refined rougher grassland. The machine is 4 years old now, has run about 125hrs in total, and works like a gem. One big annual maintenance done by the dealer, and one intermediate oil change by myself, and regular greasing of front axe and mower deck knives. Never had anything break down sofar. You never actually own a Defender. Not sure why MTD / Lawnflites are being discouraged. They're cheap, I bought mine for £500 when it was a year old and that was 7 years ago. Gets used and abused every weekend and all I've had to do to it is stick a new battery on a couple of years ago.
My neighbour bought a brand new Stiga at the same time for £3k and hit has spent most if it's life back at the repair shop! I think it would be fine on a perfect lawn but as the cutting decks are out the front, the first sign of bumps and they take hit and snap the belts.....  |

I have John Deere mulching tractor mower which has been great over the last 7 years or so. Ideally I would have got the single blade model but that was discontinued (a lot less to go wrong) having said that the twin blade has worked well without any problems.
It will cut nice and short for a lawn and also cut the paddocks when long (I usually shoot it out the side exit for that) The downside of the mulching is that if you try and cut too much off it will leave grass on the cut lawn (but not much) but if used regularly at a sensible height cut then a pretty good result. As mentioned before if you collect the grass be prepared for a huge mountain of stuff, but a bag is handy for collecting the leaves in autumn. If you can get one which does mulching, collecting and shoot out the side then that would be perfect. Toro Wheelhorse mowers are good but pricey , don't discount the lower end ones, as often they use the same motors as the more pricey ones, so have a look at the engine and see what it is. Have a look at some pricey ones first so you can compare build quality, components etc with the lower end ones when you look at them. Buy what your budget allows really, I'm sure there are deals to be had nowadays. Don't forget you can buy a big range of after market bits (I have a handy tipping trailer for moving logs/soil etc) plus you you can play 'farmer' for a bit

Just been to the honda dealer so last years HF2417 2900
Then seen the Husky 184, very nice, and a 2012 model for 2200, only concern it that it has electric dump, plus they seem to get a few re calls. |

I looked at getting a second hand one, and even posted a wanted add on here (many thanks to the offers I received).
However I decided to go for a new one in the end, a Mountfield MT1538M-SD and its brilliant. Nice and small and cheap too £1399. One thing that you may want to consider is how large is the area you need to cut. In my case it was just over 1/2 Acre so didn't need anything too big. Also do you want to mulch or collect the clippings - I wanted to mulch (quicker and no heap of rotting grass). |
