I don't want to debate what the yanks put in but I'm off on an alps trip in my D4 soon and was after a small pack for my essentials when I'm out of the car, more like a man bag, but can carry my paclite gortex, leatherman, torch, passports, bottle of water and other stuff like that, basically a half bug out bag. The bag that goes everywhere and you sling in the tent at night with your essential man stuff. I used to use one of my side pockets off my bergen but I've got feed up with it all just being thrown into one pouch, thinking of something small with molle attachments. Looked loads on the net at 5.11, helikon, mil-tec, maxpedition and the like and was wondering if anyone else on the forum uses a 'half' bug out bag and if so what you use. Could use a conventional day sack but that's boring! |

I bought a Millican bag last year for a trip, I kind of use it as a bug out bag. When flying everything that I don't want to lose goes in it and I carry it onto the plane.

I got a Camelbak backpack over 10 years ago for use on my MB, but it rarely gets used for that (prob as I don't ride the MB anymore - bad Pam). Dave has one the same as mine and still uses it for intended use!
I have used the bag (minus Blowfish hydration bladder) for all sorts of trips - inc. swimming, country shows, walking, etc. It is fairly narrow but with 3 zipped compartments and mesh pockets front and sides, you can put all sorts in there - waterproof, drinks bottle, snacks, suncream, sunglasses, camera, phone, wallet, maps, and even iPad, etc. It is also very comfy to wear. If the new models are half as good quality as my ancient one then I'd certainly recommend looking at Camelbak. 5.11 ruck sacks are brilliantly organised and very tough - but not very comfortable to wear as a ruck sack. I had a Rush 12 for daily crap and taking to work. It was quite uncomfortable so I replaced it with an Osprey Manta 20 - which is very comfy but won't be quite as resilient. I plan to buy another Rush 12 for kicking about the car at work, and use my Manta for days out on foot. Cheaper chinese copies of the Rush 12 are available but not quite the same quality.

What your describing is typically known as a Grab bag among my realms. Fantastic for ramming stuff you just might need. On tour we would have one behind each seat in the WIMIC. Then more The hanging off the side. Robust little bags for carrying plenty of stuff.

thanks for that link on the grab bags......I'm well tempted. wish I'd know about them a few weeks back before I bought a TNF courier bag.....ha ho - I like bags. I'll have to add one of these to my collection. perhaps I should have been a girl collecting bags and all my moaning......... |

sorry my reply was too late hadn't spotted thread until today, most things any one would need for being light weight mobile and on the move has been developed and refined with the military I suggest surplus stores ansd army websites for future searches |

I have a Millican 'Dave' for sale for £100. It's as new and is wasted on me so it's time for it to go to a good home. 12 months old used 3 times max. Canvas and leather it will last forever!
