United Kingdom 2013 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Epsom Green
Sankey Trailer Wheel Size
Aftwrnoon all

I've just collected my Sankey Wide Track, it tows really well but is a lot higher a the tailboard end. I had the NATO hitch on the highest setting on the slider bar as well, defender is standard height wise.

The current wheel set up is Michelin Synchrone 235/70R16 on what looks like eight spoke steel wheels, the tyres also stick out from the wheel arches by approx 2 inches.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a setup the will reduce the ride height and keep the tyres inside the arches??

Get some hub adapters for the Sankey and you can then use the same wheels as the Defender. That"ll reduce the nose down effect. More extreme is you can extend the A Frame upto 600mm, the length will have the same effect as well as greatly improve towing

Attach your NATO tow jaw to the top four holes in your rear cross member,remove the spare tyre,to accommodate the jockey wheel.I have also seen the tow jaw on the trailer fitted upside down on the underside of A frame and the brake connection point inverted to suit.I have done the former and find a better tow and weight distribution.some people retain the lowered towing braket for other 50mm tow hitches.Regarding the tyres they must be non standard as mine do not project.

The older trailers (mk2, 3 etc, often all called "Sankeys") had 6.50x16 tyres on old series-type SWB rims.

The newer ones have 7.50s, usually on Wolf XD HD rims, but neither of those tyres stick out mch, if any, from the arches.

I suspect the 8 spoke you've got has a large offset, hence why they're sticking out.

i've seen some people use the old lightwheight series3 "plastic wheelarch" kits on sankey type trailers, doesn't look too bad.

Standard wheel/tyre size is a 7.50 x 16, which is the same diameter as a 235/85 16 on a modern Defender. 235/70 is standard for a Disco I or Range Rover and is slightly smaller.

Which type of wide track is it? If it's a disk braked MkIII then the hitch is mounted within the depth of the A frame and, when attached to a Dixon Bate on the highest setting, will tow level, like this:

However, if it's a drum braked MkII then the hitch is mounted on top of the A frame and will tow 'nose down'. Darren

Fancy the idea of wheel arches like my defender has got, rather than the big square hole of the Sankey.
