Are they worth it?
I haven't even taken delivery of the 110 yet - but I'm looking for things to buy already! I've been recommended to get one by another Defender owner - I can see the weight of the wheel isn't going to do great things for the door hinges over time... Any particular ones to avoid / look at? They seem to vary dramatically in cost between £200-£800. It'll be 99% standard road use... |

Thanks for the links... A couple of thumbs up for the really cheap ones (although they can rattle), a few more thumbs up for the mid-price Mantec (although they can rattle!) and a thumbs up for the Kaymar - although it's just under £800! Seems like the Mantec is a good starting point... At least I can get the VAT back! |

I have a mantec one and I'm happy, only done one winter though so not sure how well the coating will hold up but I can sort that at a later date. As for any rattle, if you add a extra rubber washer and spend time setting it up you will not have any rattle from it.

I think the scale of this problem has become a bit overblown over the years. In Series Land Rover days, when the rear doors were only fitted with two hinges, it's true that they did suffer after a while. This was particularly true when used in places like Africa where vibrations from bad roads took their toll. As a result of this, Land Rover fitted three hinges on later models, which certainly helped. More recently (eight years or so?) Land Rover have been using a re-engineered rear door, which is much stronger than the original. Basically, unless you're planning to fit monster wheels or trek fully loaded across the dark continent, then it's probably overkill. The Kaymar takes all weight away from the back door as there is no connection with the door at all. And even after 4 years, not the slightest rattle
You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

The Mantec one takes maybe 95% of the weight off the back door. If you don't connect the piston, which allows the back door and the wheel carrier to open as one the wheel is happily supported on the carrier alone. (you have to connect it to the door though or it would just swing around on it's own) So yes, with Mantec one open the back door and the wheel swings away with it as one, no extra catches no hassle. |

Thanks Tiger, I'll have to work out if I could mount one with a tow step too, that takes up some of the mounting holes on the x-member

They're compatible with NAS rear steps. I have both fitted to mine.
