Broken windshield
This morning I had a massive impact on the front windshield. One second after crossing a commercial van with a trailer, I had shot gun blast lookalike on my front window. Not the usual tick on the window with a small crack but it should have been a rather bigger stone.

Interior of the Defender was covered with small glass particals. I felt a pain in my right shoulder apparently I was hit by a piece of glass. Luckily I didn't get glass in my eyes.

The car was immediate covered with glass inside. Dasboard, seats, cubby box, I even found glass chips in the boot of the 90. You can see the size of chips. It was one of them which hit me in the shoulder. But no worries I'm OK.

note. This was the original first LR windshield. No replacement or whatever.

It happened this morning at 8AM, I phoned Carglass at 11AM. And now at 11PM I have a new windshield properly installed at home by a very friendly and skilled Marrocan blue cullar. Many thanks to Carglass ant theire team for this service. 200% happy. Bow down Bow down Bow down

Very lucky not to have gone in your eyes with all those tiny shards. On the bright side a new screen is easier to replace than damaged paint / body work. Thumbs Up $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

There has to be a reason why the defender windscreen is vulnerable to impacts . Your picture is EXACTLY the same impact as I had 6 weeks ago in EXACTLY the same place with shards of glass in the cab . The bang was like a bomb going off and was so loud that my ears went deaf for about 5 min .This is my 3rd windscreen on my 2012 2.2 since purchase in September and my 2006 TD5 had 4 screens in 4 yrs . I'm sure there's loads more defender drivers had the same scares .

Just bad luck. Mine got smashed the other day on way to work. First defender one but had two on the iveco in 7 years.

I think the manner in which it has broken is more worrying than the frequency.

I've had a couple of big stone hits on motorways in other vehicles (including Land Rover products) and not once have I had anything like what has been posted inside the vehicle.

Makes you wonder if the windscreen spec hasn't changed from the 1970s. Shocked

How is is possible to have all these little splinters flying inside the car: I thought that windshields these days are laminated glass specifically designed so that when there is an impact like this one, no splintering takes place. Or is Pilkington Laminated in spite of its E1 marking different? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

The screens are laminated, but with a hard enough force will break both layers of glass.

Defenders get a lot of windscreen damage as the windscreen is so vertical, and I believe that the windscreen is weaker due to it not being a bonded windscreen, or having any curvature.

I recall there was a debate on our sister site RRS regarding replacement windscreens and whether there was any difference between those labelled "Land Rover" and those not.

Will look later at the windscreen as i really don't like the potential implications of a stone strike causing this. I wonder if you can fit the clear security film to a windscreen (from a legal/vehicle tech regs viewpoint) and how long it would last, especially with a heated screen.

That was a VERY big stone to do that. Any laminated screen will break in that way if hit hard enough by a sufficiently massive object.

If that had been a toughened screen (eg a Series LR) the object would have ended up on the seat.

My 2005 got hit by stone on the M3 2 days ago and has to be sorted. Now, here's my q...
Back in Aus the 110 I had was ex RAAF and had 'military' grade tyres and windscreen. The tyres were road biased but umpteen ply steel and couldn't be punctured. The windscreen I recall had special markings, triple laminate or something. Again, couldn't be damaged, by anything.
So, if I am keeping the truck for another 10 yrs, what are the options here in the UK ? Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

/\/\/\ Paintwork is a bit "loud",but am sure you could paint over it.
 Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
