Gear ratio's on a 90....
Thinking of getting Ashcroft to swap the gear ratios to 1.2 from the standard 1.4, I've had a tune for more torque etc, and it runs very well now, not done 25k yet so it's still a nice fresh engine.
There are a few posts saying that it will improve motorway driving and makes it quieter (!!) but how about general 'round town' driving, will 1st gear become like puling away in 2nd, and will it put extra stress on the engine in the long run? Anyone done it with good results?

I did it on my 110 a year or 2 back.

Yes, 1st gear is a bit higher; on the flat not noticible, but on a steep hillstart you notice it. If i had my 255/85's on then i would slip into low range to pull away on steep hills, but on the standard 235's low box isn't needed.
If you've got a nice torquey engine (i've got a VGT turbo too) with good low end grunt, you find you don't have to change gear as much either, just leave it in 3rd or 4th.

Bear in mind this is a lardy 110 station wagon with full cage, so it's pretty heavy. A much lighter 90 this problem isn't going to be as bad.

But in all, i'd do it again (in fact, will be on my 90 whenever a good priced 1.2:1 box turns up). makes for cruising much better, and a bit quieter too.

Jamie,

Got a surplus 1.2 LT230 here, 28 tooth, came off Tim's V8 as far as I am aware really low mileage.

Regards

You will find its ok. Lets face it. Singapore is indeed town driving everyday. I get stuck in traffic all the time. I've got a 1.222 swap and I'm way much happier. If you don't tow, it's fine. Uphill down hill it's ok. Serious. You've got a remapped engine, so I assume tis a td5. I'm happier with this setup over a 1.41 ratio. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

Paul,

Its something I contemplated long and hard about. I even had it booked in at Ashcrofts and then got cold feet Embarassed I do a bit of towing, and need to be able to as required, exhaust gas temp was main concern Whistle In the end I decided it just wasn't worth it. Took out the cat, fitted a louder stereo and I'm happy Cool Try pulling away in 2nd gear, it will give you an idea as to what 1.2 transfer box is.(it'll take some getting used too Whistle )

Thanks for the replies, I don't do much towing and if I did it'd only be a light load of logs but I probably need to give it some thought, my brother in law had it done from new and swears by it, I'll drive his next time I'm over there.

On a side note... Are Barbell-Jim and Diesel-Jim related?!

It's not quite as bad as second gear pulling away... maybe 1 3/4 gear

Not quite - a standard Disco 2 is on smaller tyres, which reduces the gearing significantly. Darren

This is quite a subjet as i been trying to figure it out wihich will be the best ratio for my TD5, i own a puma before and i intend to achieve a similar thing

To fix some point, changing the transfer from 1.41:1 to 1.211:1 with the standard 3,54:1 and 31 tyres at 800 RPM we will go at 8.17Km/h instead of 7.01km/h in the original setup, and as Diesel Jim says you will notice on hills.

of Fifth gear let say at 3000 RPM you will go at 134.88 Km/h instead of 115.85Km/h in this case to compare with a PUMA that has oviously different gearbox ratios will go at 139.98Km/h this means that your car with the 1,211:1 will go 3.64% lower than a puma.

Hope this helps

Or use an overdrive, 28% higher than standard so 30mph/1000rpm compared with standard 23mph/1000rpm so 60mph is a nice relaxed 2000rpm. Just higher than 6th on a Puma but you get to keep the standard gearing as well Mr. Green

Yobbie you have the overdrive with mechanical actuator or electrical?

That is actually a good point as may be the most cost effective and versattile way to have the most of your ratios

Mechanical as an extra gear lever it's a Roverdrive now known as Roamerdrive.
