2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SVX Soft Top Santorini Black

Rear Diff oil leak

Noticed the other day what looks like a reasonable significant leak from the propshaft joint on the rear diff. It's booked into GSLR on the 15th, but I want to make sure there is enough oil in there for the time being.

I know it takes 1.7l as it retains a bit when you drain, but the question is, how do I work out whats in there and how much to top up?

On other cars it was simply a case of filling until the oil was level with the side filler... But is this the same with the Landy, or am I safer draining it all then refilling with the requisite 1.7l??

The workshop manual says:

3. If necessary inject new oil until oil runs out from filler/level hole. Allow excess oil to drain and wipe clean.
For additional information, refer to: Specifications (205-02 Rear Drive Axle/Differential, Specifications).

So you're safe to top-up to the level plug. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Also depends on the amount and frequency that it's leaking also. Mine was only the odd drip occasionally and was okay for a couple of months. I did get it fixed though and it fine now.

Check the axle breather is not obstructed as the axle will have pressure when hot and cause the seal to leak. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..
