I have seen that someone recommends the Odyssey PC1350 as recommended replacement for single Puma battery. Can this be confirmed, meaning are the measurements of this model allowing a plug 'n play installation, or do you need to make all kinds of adjustments like K9F with the PC1700 experienced.
I also have seen on the Odyssey site that thre PC1350 is especially heavy at 27.6 kg, which is equal to the weight of the PC1700, but 5 kg more than the intermediate PC1400 and PC1500 models. Must be due to more lead inside.... So wot say abt a PC1350 for my next battery? I am not drawing giga amounts of electricity as have no winch, etc... Eric You never actually own a Defender. Good job
Everything takes longer than it should but that's what makes it worth the beer Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Brendan it was one of the deciding factors that you run and recommended Odyssey on another thread that aided my decision. Thank you. According to the Odyssey box packaging PC 1700 29.0 KG = 63.9LBS in 'old money!' Either way the Odyssey write up stated you can expect an 8-12 year lifespan so worth the extra expense in my view! Brendan, why do you prefer Odyssey over Optima? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

Good advertising I'd say! Did it for me! With the Odyssey you get the following: 1700 cranking amps for 5 seconds 1540 cranking amps for 10 seconds 1355 cranking amps for 20 seconds Limited 3- and 4-year full replacement warranty The highest recharge efficiency of any sealed lead battery on the market Optima Yellow Top: Cold Cranking (EN) 975 Warranty 2 years It is also 60mm taller than the Odyssey What makes me feel better is that since I bought one last week the retailer has put £15 on the price. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Browsing through Tayna.com, there are rival makes (such as Numax & Enduroline) that have similar high capacity & high CCAs. And are cheaper.
I'm looking for one that will, on its own, be good enough for a winch and the OE ICE, plus a bit more external lighting. Optimas can be lain on their sides... Both Optimas and Odyessy batteries are AGM, and are certified for transport by air.
The Odyessy can be mounted upside down and will not leak acid if you smashed the case, both of which is not applicable to the cheaper standard lead acid batteries. The normal Odyessy and Optima yellow top batteries available for 4x4 use in the UK are the Odyessy 1500 available in two terminal configurations and the Optima D34 Odyessy 1500 are about £226 whereas the Optima is £216 Sizes 1500 is 275 x 172 x 200 mm whereas the Optima is 254 x 174 x 200 mm, basically the same size with the Odyessy being 21 mm longer. Odyessy is a 68 amp hour battery against the Optima 55 amp hour CCA of Odyessy is 850 amps against the 690 amps of the Optima Short circuit amps of Odyessy is about 3000 amps, I.e. a 6 inch nail would evaporate then recharge the battery and it is good to go (. Not really recommended to do IMO ) So for similar money you get more bang for your bucks with the Odyessy and they appear to have a much better reputation if you do a google on them. If you intend keeping your vehicle for a long time go for an Odyessy, if you change every couple of years consider another brand. Brendan |

Is it really 'being wasteful?' I think not! Because 'prevention is better than cure!' If you know your battery is 'on the way out' and do nothing about it because of being 'spendthrift' let's hope when you can't get it started you'll be parked outside an automotive battery supplier. Maybe consider buying one and keeping it on-board until such time as you need it if you wish to push and squeeze your dying one to the limit, but what exactly will you be saving in the interim? Apart of course from the inevitable new battery! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Marius,
As both Optima and Odyssey batteries are certified for air transportation I would have thought all you'd need is a supplier that is prepared to send you one to where you live? May be costly though? Optima I can get here, but Odyssey I dont think is distributed. Postage would be more than getting a locally obtained Optima, but then again there might be the issue of fitting the Optima (might not fit - too high).

The 55 amp hr Optima will fit fine, if it is available locally to you.
My caution was about the 75 amp hour one as I was concerned about its height. Would suggest you get your measuring stick out and check before parting with your pennies/rand. Brendan Ps, just had a quick look at air freight, ok was guessing on packed weight and sizes but carriage would be around £200! |
