Interested in this also.
I've 90% decided on a Mantec Carrier with a Simbars Disco wheel mounted rack. Thinking that the plate would mount behind the spare and the Mantec carrier would take the weight of the spare and the bikes. And because of the offset the door would still open even with the bikes on.??? This is pure speculation though? Has anybody tried this set up? |

I have the Nakatanenga swing away carrier.
Fitting was easy (just a few bolts and nuts into the cross member), price was good. The advantage of a wheel carrier is that the weight of the spare is not on the door hinges (door will eventually sag and not align with the door opening) I have also fitted a bike carrier but on the tow bar rather than on the spare. To do this, I had to bring the tow bar forward a bit so the bike carrier cleared the spare wheel. Click image to enlarge |

I have the basic Mantec one installed on my 110. It is supporting an Alloy Terrafirma Beadlock wheel and 265/75r16 BFG MT tyre. Not the lightest combo, but I have already had to adjust it once after approx 10,000miles. I have a step system(from Mud) mounted around it to make it easier climbing up to the roof rack as well. When I stand on it it creaks and moves and doesn't instil that much confidence.
Would I buy one again? No. I think I would spend the extra money on getting one more substantial. I don't know the name of it, but I have seen it on this forum. It is a single support taken from the crossmember only. Would I support bikes on it? Definitely no. Not with the value of bikes nowadays. This is only my opinion, but it is based upon what I have experienced only. Hope this helps. |

THAT'S THE ONE. I knew it was on here somewhere. Is it as good as it looks? |

Not had it fitted very long. Nevertheless as an engineer myself I can say that it is very well made and very sturdy. It is at the higher end of the market but in this case you definately get what you pay for. No drilling required just a straight forward bolt-on fit. Never mind the weight of a bike or two, it would take significant more weight than you could reasonably apply as it is borne by the rear crossmember! Highly recommended.
I got a bargain as I got mine from a fellow forum member who lives nearby. 'Leeds' (Brendan) a site sponsor sells them! http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go...1982794902 This thread may also be of interest...... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic16722....swing+away If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! I've had a safari equip wheel carrier fitted for about 18 months now with no issues, but it does sit rather high up.
I bought mine from step toe (leeds), I wanted that one because I wanted to fit bumperettes and they make a pair to suit. Have a look in my gallary Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

Any swing away carrier can be fitted with bumperettes with a little ingenuity.....I had my stainless ones 'reworked' to fit!

I got a bog standard cheap (£100+ ish) one from Paddocks. It wasn't quite as easy to fit as the instuctions suggested, but not difficult. I've read quite negative reviews of them in other places, but I can't really fault it. Mine does a significant number of off road miles per week, normally at reasonable speed, not crawling along in low range and has stood up to all the abuse. This is the second one that I've had and find they take the weight off the rear door hinges. The only down side is the difficulty in accessing the door handle, and you can damage hands or keys left in the wrong place when opening the door, but I suspect this may be affected by the size of tyre you're running. Dirty Deeds - Done Dirt Cheap
