That website is propoganda for the companies that manufacture 'overpriced' frontal protection systems. Here is an extract from the official dcument:
Please read carefully, you will realise i looks at vehicles that are manufactured with FPS and it talks about the FPS itself. At no point does it go into fitting an old (Manufactred before 25 May 07) FPS to a vehicle after it has been sold to the public. At the end of the day, tell your insurance company and if they say no- take it off or go elsewhere where they will insure it. Glyn |

I have asked martin to move this to a new topic as its not really anything to do with spotted anymore.
Anyway This insurance thing and wheel,s tyres front protection etc. I take my vehicles to my broker and we go over all the 'extras' that are fitted. The only reason for this is, if anything gets nicked off them I can get it replaced without an argument. Never have they questioned the legality of anything. But then again nothing fitted has been illegal as far as I am concerned. Has anyone ever heard of an insurance company refusing a payout because the tyres were a bit wider than standard. |

AndrewS,
I agree with your sentiments, there may be numerous insurance companies that will continue to provide cover or turn a blind eye over exposed tyre tread but on Confused.com there are numerous companies that will drop off the radar and refuse to provide cover as soon as you declare an A - Bar. Churchill my company is one of them, I telephoned them and they will continue to provide cover and load the premium significantly if the A -Bar is the soft type only, the metal type they will not cover at all! The ramifications of fitting something to your vehicle without notifying or seeking clarification from insurers can be potentially severe! Especially with my 'luck' that's why I always check! Soon as finances allow I'm going to join the 'wheels like Carlos Fangdango' clique. They look brilliant! Not sure whether to have Zus or Mach 5s either way they'll be black powder coated, Victor Meldrew and anyone else that has an aversion to 'em can kiss my swingers!

There's been lots of investigation of this over time. The law states that 'hard' A-bars are illegal to manufacture and sell (not fit) unless they are demonstrated to be "necessary" for fair use of the vehicle or are used as part of a winch setup. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |
