iPhone now becomes sat-phone
Great little idea - thought would be a handy post for those with exploring tendencies !! Very Happy ... although given my O2 reception in deepest, darkest Buckinghamshire maybe I need one here ...

After seeing this on here ive been googleing and trying to find info i do a lot of work on rigs and boats in rough areas
Ive found that you can download the the thuraya satsleeve app from the App Store which ive done then on opening the app it syncs to the phones contacts which is fine then it asks to attach the phone to the satsleeve to make calls which i dont have as yet and so my question is how do they charge you for calls as to me it gives the impression that your service provider charges you accordingly as opposed to a seperate contract like what im used to

Hi Speedy
you are only using your hand set to link to another provider like Irridum, who will connenct you and charge you a kings ransom per min for the call
We had a suitcase sat phone for a job in the Gobi in Mongolia that I used to contact the Drs when needed back up on a patient and it worked fine - just expensive!
It wont work on an orange tariff I'm affraid! Whistle Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

^^ As above,

The sat sleeve has it's own sim card- this is what you call off. The iphone just acts as a interface between you and the 'sat phone'. Costs will be as they deem necessary.

Seems the price of the sleave in the US is about $500 (£350ish) for the base model up to $800 (£500) for the data one later in the year. For those prices I would be tempted to stick to a separate sat phone and iphone.

You buy the sleeve and then the airtime . Thurmy is cheaper than iridium .
Sat phones uk have been selling them for a while .
Iridium airtime is 3 times the price

They are cheaper but coverage isn't as good- Thuraya is ok for central areas and that is about it, they get very fuzzy towards the extremities. Their data rate is also lacking...... guess it is one of those 'You get what you pay for'. After making many phone calls in the middle of nowhere all over the world on iridium and only ever dropping the odd call (normally by moving the antenna) I would highly recommend it- VERY reliable service.

I use the iridium extreme which is great . Mainly for South America and Northern Europe.
