i have a 96 110 and the seals on the vent flaps are a sort of foam setup,the passenger side floor is always wet if it has been raining(and when is'nt it raining !!)i.m wondering if the water is coming through these seals? thinking about putting oe rubber seals on.anyone done this on a similar aged model and did it work??

The leak could also be from the windscreen hinges/brackets or the rubber windscreen seal between the seal and the windscreen frame. Consider running some sealant around both.

Mine came from there too. I have few drops under the clunch pedal and confuse me a bit. Sikaflex it's your friend |

Lay some kitchen towel along the full length of the instrument panel with one edge slid down between the panel and the windscreen. Do not let it go down as far as the top of the scuttle vents. Wait 'til it rains or play a hose on the screen for a while then look to see if the paper is wet.
I had to do this to my Defender to prove it was the screen not the scuttle vents that my dealers had 'tried' to fix three times!  |

The rubber seals stopped being used before 1996 and the foam-rubber ones were standard fit so unless yours are some kind of DIY fit then they are more than likely the original ones.
I replaced my (brand-new) rubber ones for the foam-rubber type many years ago and found them a great improvement. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

Your right Litch, I was referring to the actual windscreen rubber, but the foam gasket between the windscreen frame and the bulkhead is a likely cause of leak.

morning all.thanks for advice.ARC99- you suggest heater hose but minr is'nt using water so i don't think this is the cause.WARPIG- rubber windscreen seal,maybe as mine is cracked.LAURIE I WILL TRY YOUR SUGGESTION TODAY AS IT IS SNOWING SO WON'T NEED A HOSE!! LITCH-mine is a 1996 and therefore fitted with foam type vent seal and you say the foam is better but i find that i get more wind noise than i did with the rubber type fitted to my old 90 (when the vents are closed obviously) cheers all

I was actually refering to the vent-flap seals in my earlier reply. I dislike the foam-rubber seals fitted between the windscreen-frame & bulkhead and have just removed mine and replaced it with a genuine rubber one again. Don't get me wrong, foam rubber certainly has its uses (like I said, I prefer them for the flap-seals) but along the top-rail I am not 100% convinced about the water-sealing properties of the foam-rubber type. Ingress of water along there is the cause of many prematurely rotten bulkheads so I prefer to stick to the tried & trusted type. Andy cracks in the windscreen rubber could allow water to get in, many people simply seal them up but that can look awfully messy whereas a new seal is very cheap and relitively easy to fit. Unfortunately water leaks are very difficult to trace as water travels and may appear nowhere near where it actually enters the vehicle. As already stated paper-towel is very good for finding water and with a little paitence you should sort it out. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |
