All this talk of winches makes we want one. I bought a Tifor hand winch on the basis that I'll maybe need to use it once a year and didn't want tens of kg sitting over the front bumper for the rest of the time. Also around £150 instead of £500+.
However, the thing also weighs a ton and although I can sling it in the back I'm starting to doubt my decision. I'll still only need it once a year but I'm feeling left out One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Just been quoted £749 + VAT for a Goldfish 9-5c with Dyneema Bowrope, Defender fitting kit and Aircon bumper. Does that sound reasonable or should I push Dave harder ? Bob |

I will be very interested to see some pictures when you have it fitted and also any 'gotchas' you find when fitting everything ! Bob |

You guys not willing to go second hand? The reason why I mention it is because you could get a whole lot more for your money. Over the past few years I have purchased the following:
Superwinch Husky (Probably the most reliable winch out there) which just the casing, gears and drum was origional, the motor/ solenoids had been new and mounted it to a new Mantec bumper £550 (RRP £1400). Warn 8275 with scorpion racing tubular bumper. The winch and bumper was like new £800 (RRP £2,000). ^^ Both of the above have been tried and tested by Camel Trophy. The Superwinch by Lone wolf transglobal expedition and the Warn is the wepon of choice by every competition vehicle out there. Glyn |

I have been looking at second hand but not found anything yet that is significantly cheaper than new. Bob |

Used it once - to pull a tree out. It's very flexible in that you're not constrained to pulling at a certain angle, from a certain point on the car. However, it is a bit of a fiddle to set everything up and is INCREDIBLY slow. Once everything is taught, you can get into a rhythm and it all moves quite steadily but when you're trying to take up the slack then it's a bit of an ar*e - especially for 1 person to manhandle. Good to know I've got something to rely on but certainly not as convenient as an electric winch. I've also got full cage (windows and cargo barrier) in the back and I wouldn't want all those heavy things kicking about in there if there was any chance I'd roll. if you go the second hand route just be prepared to keep spending is my experience. i have a second hand husky for £400 or so at the time. In the end it needed a refurb and new motor which cost another £300 ish. could of almost had a new one for that.
With the Goldfish range now you can have a new winch for 2nd hand money almost. i have an 8274 front (new) and the husky as above rear and am looking to get a lowine winch for the training vehicle. at the moment TDS is the choice from my perspective for robustness, backup, price, pulling umph and low battery draw (i will only run one battery on this truck) Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
