Your opinion on tyre repair kits v space saver v full size
Not that Defenders are affected, but what is everyone's opinion on the punture repair "gunge" kits that vehicles are being given instead of spare wheels, even space savers. Better to make run-on-flat tyres mandatory.

I hope that no LR will get the gunge kits or space saver spare wheel instead of a full size OE wheel. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Surely the puncture seal stuff will cause awful vibration and issues too. Like Slime good for a bike tyre or wheel barrow but not a car. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

I had the gunge kit in my Meriva VXR... Utter piece of cr4p... The compressor is fine, but the white muck is useless... I went out and bought a full sized spare alloy from the dealer, and had a proper rated tyre fitted.. Never had to use the spare after that.. In the end, I px'ed it for my 90!

Just bought a tyre plug kit to keep under the seat.. Just in case!!! ... ,-------,

Depends on the vehicle to be honest.

Where possible, I'd like a full spare.

However, there are occasions where its not possible due to space or safety.

My Motorhome for instance, is based on a long wheelbase Transit and comes with the Ford electric pump with sealant injection. Much better as you won't get me trying to jack that weight up on the side of an Italian Motorway! Craig Rogers

after i hit a brick in the dark on a Welsh mountain road which shredded the side wall I am a firm beliver in a full sized spare. but i do carry tyre weld when driving in Europe BM52

Not a defender I know, but my fathers last FFRR Vogue came from the factory, nice and shiny new, all the bells and whistles and a big price tag to go with it, AND..... a space saver rather than a full size spare. Pretty poor on LR behalf, but the full size spare was a unnoticed optional extra. Imagine a RR on a 20inch (?) skinny steel wheel! Classy.

Space savers are fine yes they limit your top end but you get home

Sealant kits are more common and in the the big wide world of company cars a full size spare affects Co2's and the PCT (personal car tax) to the end user.

we are all FOOKED now a Defner will never be a low CO2 motor but Euro six is around the corner for cars & five for commercials

The father in laws my12 freelander came with the gunge kit so we bought a single wheel to match his off eBay about a quater of the price of one from the factory. Mr. Green

+1 Thumbs Up ... 2 of my last 3 punctures have been side-wall. One in a hire car in Croatia, and one off-roading in my Disco2. We ordered MrsK's Evoque with a proper spare, and I since bought a space-saver for my XC70.

I will not rely on a gunge/compressor kit unless absolutely necassary Arrow Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

My mate works in a tyre place, and he says they can't/don't repair tyres if the gunge has been used in them.

Absolutely right! Once the tyre weld has been in the tyre, it can't be repaired like a normal puncture could Rolling Eyes

Interestingly, we bought some new Trucks recently, and they came with this gunge stuff Shocked Mind you, they didn't even come with a spare before, so I suppose that's a step up Confused An engine to TDi for!

Also, many tire places will charge you more if you have used one of those tire-weld products. Once the tyre is off they then have to clean the rim before fitting a new one- if it is fresh it takes 20 seconds- if it has been in for a while they have to spend quite a while scraping it off.

Anything bigger than a nail and the tire weld will struggle- especially on a 4x4 tire where there is more flex/ movement in the tread. Minimum I would want to have a space saver.

Oh, Audi R8 comes with a space saver- looked very funny when one turned up at our place Rolling with laughter

The gunge is a waste of time and ruins your tyres. I've had cars with space savers and used them when needed - they've worked fine at slow speed to get me to a tyre place but out of choice I'd opt for a full size spare.

Usually I've identical full sized spares but my P38 which had 16" alloy wheels had a full size steel spare which was fine.

I can't understand the Defender owners who fit bigger wheels and tyres and then keep the original spare - it looks daft and is as much use as a chocolate fireguard Rolling with laughter John
