how much is it going to cost me ??
Hello all..

I've been given the option to buy a 2001 Defender 110 TD5 County with 37,000 miles on the clock.

Machanically very good, drives very well and the chassis on close inspection looks good.. there is some surface rust just bhind the front bumper but thats it.

The body however is not as good.. front and rear doors on the drivers side have gone on the inside. but the Bulkhead concerns me the most.

There are rust bubbles around the hinges below the screen and the gutter type lip that the bonnet closes against has holes in it.

i've checked under the dash and cant see any holes but the driver and pasenger floors are wet.

Also its got a sunroof which might account for the wet floors.

It's only had 2 owners and has a full history.

i'm trying to work out how much i should be looking to budget on the rust issues and factor that into the price I offer.. he currently wants £9000

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Gary

Probably best do something about the rust bubbles it will only get worse.

Extreme option would be have it taken back and re-sprayed
Then wax oil or other protection sprayed into bulkhead, doors and chassis.

I would budget £400-500 on paint
And £300-600 on wax oil

Depends who does it.

Second hand bulkheads are expensive and a lot of work to fit.

Doors go for £500 plus second hand a pair. Plus painting.

9k sounds a lot for a rusty TD5, even if the mileage is low. The prices will settle after the bad weather goes again...

My 2001 TD5 90 (57K on the clock) cost a lot less than that last year and I purchased as seen.

Two brand new doors plus spraying cost me £700, I fitted myself.

To sort all the other bodywork issues, which included a partial respray, cost in the region of £700.
I am lucky as there is a bodyshop about a mile from me who do an excellent job and are very inexpensive if you pay cash Whistle

The biggest problem I had was that the vehicle had not been serviced for a few years and it was this one aspect that cost me the most. Oil was like treacle and the end result was a blown turbo.

I had a full service and all oils plus brake and clutch fluid replaced. New discs all round and new pads.

I would say that price is a bit steep especially if the bulkhead is bad.

Bear in mind that the 2002 model is a lot better, especially on a 110 SW. The main reason, the doors. Replacements are expensive, and you may as well fit the newer ones. Factor in a bulkhead replacement and your talking about a lot of money.

The 15p engine has improvements over the 10p but thanks no big deal. The later ECU is easier and cheaper to remap and easy to add cruise control to.

If you could get it for £8000 and happy doing the work yourself then great.

Also the chassis won't last much longer, not many will unless regularly treated from new, the outriggers and rear cross member seem to be made from cheese!

Thanks for the great advice. I wasn't aware there was any major difference between the 01 & 02 models. I've been focusing on TDCI models to much but have now decided that I'm more likely to be able to afford a TD5. Is is the first sub 10k 110 to be advertised in jersey for ages.

i'd buy a mainland one if you could. less chance of rust for starters on a vehicle that age

Bulkheads are £500 ish bare new. i would bank on changing it on that age a vehicle. job is then done for good, esp if you waxoyl the int.

doors are around the £400 each mark. Cheers
