Hi all
Quick question... I just found my turbo dangling (again) as 2 studs attaching it to the exhaust manifold had fallen out and the remaining nut was off. I know some members have got around this problem so I just wanted some advice. Do you reckon it's better to replace the studs again and use nuts (as original but possibly flawed design), or use bolts? If bolts, carbon steel or stainless? I know carbon steel is stronger but I don't think the bolts need to be particularly strong, just stay tight on repeated heating and cooling. I don't know how stainless behaves with heat, or if it grips better... I have temporarily fixed it with 2 stainless bolts and a stud with a stainless nut, so I'd like a good reason to change setup before I pi$$ around in the cold some more. Many thanks Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Thanks Steve.
How do you get the studs in tight enough? The only one that hadn't fallen out had nothing to tighten it with (splines/socket etc). Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Always use studs
Best way to do it is use a high temp thread lock... then using two nuts locked against each other it will allow you to screw them in tight. The nuts should be locking nuts anyhow but nothing to stop you then adding a little thread lock on them too. Glyn |

Cheers
For ignorant oiks like me, what's the advantage of using studs in an exhaust manifold, other than ease of assembly Something to do with extracting them after corrosion, perhaps? Iv tried high temp thread lock and its a waste of time just do them as tight as you can with 2 nuts just not the nuts your going to fit it with as they are closed slightly so you will tighten the stud as well as tighten the nut but as said you must use genuine LR

Always best to have at least 2 studs to help locate the gasket. During use it makes no difference. Maybe, given this isn't an isolated problem someone should develop an uprated kit for the Puma like those available for the TD5. IRB and JE engineering both do this for the TD5 so may be able to do similar. |

They are a proper high temp K nut. I fit these a lot and have never had any problems.
