Gearbox and Clutches
Im wondering...many of us have had new clutches etc - but i wonder how much wear and stress on the gearbox this has done?

How many have gone on to require a new box? how bomb proof are they? Mike

New clutch ('improved' version) last spring around 6,000 miles and new gearbox at just over 12,000 miles last October. The only car I've ever had from new, and the only car where I needed a replacement clutch or gearbox (including doing over 100,000 miles in one of my Range Rover classics) 1953 80

I don't mean to hijack the thread Mike, but I just wondered, the chances are that some of us might need a new gearbox at some stage when the warranty expires. How much will it cost I wonder to have a new one fitted?. It makes me paranoid reading this stuff!.

For sure many more clutches than gboxes. I got a new clutch at 10000km and I“getting a new transfer these days.

My 2nd gear is quite dodgy and I“m sure the synchro is going to bang soon. I hope vey soon. I do know a new gbox was released and some people are happy and some not. Now, how can you tell you get the new version?

A new Gbox I guess is around 2000 BGP Shocked Puma 110" SW

I am sorry but when I see that some Defenders had 2 or 3 clutches replaced or 2 or 3 gear boxes, I can only think that it is due to:
- extreme bad luck
- poor dealer installation
- use of vehicle outside the parameters of normal use as planned by the factory. One should not take the advertising material claims literally. Yes, the Defender can do all those things, but not necessarily simultaneously or all day long.

I can understand defective material having to be changed once, but more than once? Boldly going nowhere

Mine is on its 2nd replacement clutch. Embarassed
The original clutch would not take up the drive and failed at about 12000 miles. The 1st replacement clutch (a heavy duty one I'm told!) lasted about 3000 miles before disintegrating - springs somehow came out! The 2nd replacement clutch (a modified one I'm told) has now covered 4000 miles.

I'm now beginning to get slamming through the transmission when changing gear again and juddering when letting the clutch out again! Banging Head onwards and upwards

It would be useful to know what type of use the vehicles have had which are going through clutches and gearboxes ?

Not wishing to add to the worries - a couple of contacts i have at Lode Lane tell me (now i've ordered one !) that to keep a Puma after the warrenty period expires, you'll need deep pockets or drive it with everything crossed Shocked

It's only a matter of time 007. There can't be this many cases of extreme bad luck??

I'll be honest, i'm starting to flap as mine is out of warrenty soon. Rolling Eyes
