Mantec RAI to snorkel conversion on puma
A closer look at the puma setup aiming to upgrade to a waterproof ducting.

It’s clear that the OEM ducting is far from waterproof making all the bolt on snorkels useless for water.

First a look at the original ducting and the multiple points LR provided to get water out of the ducting.

Airbox:

Has 2 outlets, one in the rubber mount for draining the box itself, then one in the tube piece just in front of the “static fan”.

(some people take this one out with a dremel etc. no need for that this thing slides out easily towards the ducting)



Ducting:

Just after the inlet piece is a collection box with a quite drastic big draining facility. Guess that one’s necessary with the stock side intake but cannot be seen or reached when in place so I am sure some people are not aware of this.



Mantec snorkel

Although supplied with foam to seal off (for dust) this doesn’t work at all as you can see on the imprint below.

Restrictive

A lot of people mention the oem ducting being restrictive. The smallest square opening at the intake is a bit less than 40x100 = 40cm2
The pipe diameter of the airbox is 70mm or 38,5 cm2
So there is no restriction size wise, there will be a worse flow as the tubing has an irregular shape compared to a nice flowed tube but it’s far from breathing through a straw as some mention.

Still trying to find out if 70mm ducting is able to transport the 1530 liters of air per minute the engine needs. It would need to travel at 6.5m/sec but that doesnt help me much. Any tuners willing to enlighten me on this?

I guess LR did their homework but is the 70 "just enough" for the stock engine or with "a margin" so the eventual extra horses that come with a tune are also able to breath freely?


Upgrade

I’ll update this with sizes and pics etc once I have it finished but as a principle

I will have 2 PP plates made with matching sizing and screw locations to sandwich the body panel at the inlet and allowing the mantec snorkel being attached to it. All sealed off the outside entrance should be 100% waterproof.



The internal plate will have a 70mm hose connection piece welded on it so a flex pipe can be routed between airbox and inlet.

I will also put a festo quick coupling on this plate so all venting pipes can be connected directly into the air inlet.

The flexi hose will easily fit into the 90mm diameter opening of the airbox and there slide on the 70mm internal pipe
Sealing off by filling the complete gap with some good silicone gleu and ready till airbox.

More to come once I have the plates made up.

Well there is the old issue Crying or Very sad

The Mantec RAI is just that a raised air intake and has never been described as a snorkel, whereas the Safari is a Snorkel Razz Thumbs Up

yes agree with all the above

I was surprised that nobody offers an aftermarket solution for connection the RAI's to the airbox in a decent way, its nothing more than a plate with hose connection and some silicone.

The safari is superior but i don't like it looks on a defender and don't know if it works with a roll cage (not that i have one).

anyway i didn't want to start another which is best snorkel topic, just sharing how the mantec/oem system can be improved quite easily.

I have always laughed at the Safari V other snorkel/ RAI argument.

As long as the system is watertight it is a snorkel- Safari supply pipes that replace the LR pipes, where Mantec supply sealant and instructions of how to fully seal the LR pipework...... Which is better at preventing water getting in- they are the same.

It all comes down to personal choice (pretty much whichever you prefer the look of). I went Mantec as I prefer the look of it and it fits perfectly with my roll cage.

Just remember to make sure it is air/watertight before going in deep water Thumbs Up

i know the ecus hi up on the bulkhead but the rest is under the seat so i can see no need for a RAI without further mods to the wiring.

Perhaps the argument is that a RAI will prevent water/muck that is thrown-up the side of the vehicle - like when you get a bow-wave, etc.?

Glyn i agree with you but the new style mantec is complete rubbish at sealing off and not intended to be a snorkel in the first place.
The construction will never ever seal off, not even for dust, so its a cosmetic chimney in its standard form.
I am aware of this and it went on my nerves so i tackled the whole piping to at least have peace of mind.

I once hydrolocked my fiesta nosediving it into a flood puddle and am since kind of hydrophobic. Rolling Eyes Electric problems were the least of my problems that moment.

You all know how it goes when offroading and feeling king of the hill... there's actually a recent topic on here with a video of a non snorkel going through a small stream, the argument "3 others went before" is exactly what would cause me to have trouble. so better be safe than sorry.
