I fitted a RAI to my 110 mainly due to issues caused by my roof rack. My unusuable problem was due to my Brownchurch roof rack being covered in chequerplate and when I parked facing downhill and down slightly to the drivers side the run off of water from the roofrack, either when washing or rain, would track down the A post and front brace then track down and pour across the wing vent with some of it entering the air intake. With heavy rain or when hosing down the amount of water would far overload the drains in the system so after two air filters FUBARed I stuck the RAI on. I have plans to fix a pipe into the bottom of the RAI and have it long enough to reach the air box for no amount of silicon attempts have come anywhere near to sealing the rather tired LR pipework.

Been reading this, as I want to do this mod on mine, but can't quite understand it all...Did not look under my bonet yet, but... The pipe from the snorkel to the airbox is not one piece, with a single diameter? You seem to have two new pipes running there? Am I looking correctly? Shouldn't the pipe be flat on the inside? Plenty of pics here.. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic25864-45.html
and for more analysis read all the pages. Keep in mind that there are differences beteween LHD and RHD defenders, heater-servo-abs are on the other side. |

I think that me, you and Tatra all drive LHD Defenders.... I've read those threads, but was having a hard time understanding some things... Now that I've looked under my bonnet I thing I got it... -Tatra made a direct link from the Vent air intake to the heater (white pipe) ? -And a direct ilink from the RAI to the air filter (black pipe)? Just can't figure out the diameter used...70mm, 90mm....? Lrmaniac,
you are correct White pipe is the ventilator to top of wing Black one is 100mm = 90mm inside diameter direct from rai inlet plates to airbox. Airbox is opened up to 90mm also The only restriction i have now, caused by the wall thickness of the plastic plates is 80mm It would be better to have the black pipe made from something smooth. But to my opinion the differences would be minimal. The best part was modding the airbox. 2cents |

Just had a piece of that pipe on my hands... It's so thin, how is it 100mm on the outside and 90mm on the inside? I measured it roghly and it seemed 100mm inside & out... And isn't that pipe too fragile? Couldn't it be ripped by a stone chip or when washing the engine? Hi Pouf!
unfortunately not.. (and not planning on taking the airbox out again in this weather ) The hose enters the airbox housing and is glued/sealed in place. so sealant is between outside of hose and inside of airbox entrance (see pic on 2nd page where you see the white sealant that was flowing on the inside of the tube) This is a bit opposite as normal where the hose would go over the airbox entrance and then be clamped. Reason for doing so is that i needed to have a hose that fitted both my plastic inlet pieces (90mm OD) and the airbox 90mm ID) hope that makes sense |

Hi Lrmaniac
Yes of course you are correct, the hose itself is about 1mm thick, what i meant with the 100/90 is if you would see the corrugations / spiral as full material you keep a free ID of 90 and 10mm is the spiral "thickness" The hose that i have is heat resistant to 360°C and oil etc proof. While thin its not such an easy material to damage. Time will tell... |

I really need to do something like this, having drowned my first engine. I've seen Tatra805's mods, but unable to do the fabrication of the adapter from wing inlet to hose myself. Also recently noticed mark_d's efforts in the same department.
While browsing the usual suspects sites, I was pleased to find an adapter to allow me to do this. As I failed to buy it immediately, I can no longer find it. Has anyone else noticed this adapter being available and if so, can they please point me in the right direction. |

Inigo, I'm considering doing a group buy of the kit I've done if you are interested in the bigger pipe and powder coated finish. See here:http://1drv.ms/1EHyGIu edit: Broken link updated http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/ Last edited by mark_d on 15th Nov 2014 7:42am. Edited 1 time in total |
