Everybody I think has their own way of doing it but I'd say the most professional way would be to screw it down with something in between to protect the paint. (Even though mines riveted by previous owner) That's how I'd do it with screws.

Land rover wing tops come with backing already fitted by far the best as its curved along wing edge too rivnuts and set screws

Fitted Mammouth chequer plate to mine ( available in several places) comes with proper foam/neoprene(?) backing, nicely finished too.

I got mine from First Four Offroad, its made by Mammouth and they also supply a sticky back gasket so you can stick it to the back of the checker plate before fitting it

I've have genuine Landrover tops fitted to both my Pumas - best fit and quality of the lot and fitted with the gaskets and flush screws into rivnuts. John

i fitted the Mamouth set also, fits nicely, came with gaskets to go in between, and stainless nuts and screws
someone told me theyre made by the same firm that make the genuine LR ones.... |

Mammoth with rubber foam backing, painted in body color (white).
Hex stainless steel bolt and stainless Nylstop nuts. I filled the Hex inprint with epoxy glue, good deterrent against would be thief but still removable if needed. |
