re-using this topic.....
just fitted my QT diff guards yesterday, and there were two big bolts bolts to fit don't know where...Well I think they were to fit where that red rectangle is , but I don't have any holes there.... Click image to enlarge Did LR changed the diff design? I didn't read anywhere in the instructions that I had to drill a hole there... that is strange....but even if that was the case (wich I don't thin it is, maybe the diff guard design changed a bit in the meantime), I don't have those holes in my diff to fit those large bolts you have... The QT website lists the same rear guard for both the 110 and 130? I can't really tell with your picture but did you have to undo the bottom 3 nuts on the diff to slide the guard on before tightening? To me it doesn't look as if it is sitting snug up against the bottom of the diff.
As to the holes not being present, are they on the other side of the diffs on LHD? Are they there but filled in with mud etc.? Brian. |

I did had to undo the 3 bolts at the bottom to fit it (but my pic is in fact strange, as I don't see the guard behind the bolts! edit: just went downstairs and checked - it's bolted behind the bolts)... and two on top to fit the upper bracket...As for the holes, there is a some sort of flat rectangle on there, as if the holes had been filled...but there was no mud...I cleaned it to check that.... ...did not really looked on the other side to check if there were holes on the right side of the diff (edit: just went downstairs and checked - there are no holes on either side) ...But according to their website, from 2003 onwards there are no diferences between the back diff guards(110 like mine, or 130), not even regarding LHD or RHD...if I read it right.... Can't comment on the fact you have no holes on the rear diff. The puma guard would only be safely fitted if both those fittings are made. Don't feel you can get away without fitting both of these bolts into place. Can you imagine if one came off on the motorway and went bouncing into the car behind?
My experience of fitting these seriously solid guards was: the front was a pig, the light top plate needs to be bent a little to meet the guard along with a jack under the guard itself. A pig but doable. The rear guard needed one of those top two holes filed out slightly (only .5mm or so), and the two holes in the diff case needed the thread cleaning out carefully with a tap before the bolt would go in. Awesome guards but took longer to fit than expected. I also don't like the way the front just touches the bottom of the diff pan, that will trap wet muck and eventually cause corrosion I think. |

As long as the cast block is present on the diff, you could always drill and tap new holes. I could take one of the bolts out and measure the depth of the holes in mine if it would help? Also when I fitted the rear guard I had to ream out one of the side fixing holes slightly to get it to fit. Plus the middle slot for the diff nut was a right pain to get at to tighten once the guard was on.

I believe that the guard is secure, despite not having those screws fitted...if it gets knocked maybe it will come off...you have a point there... As for fitting, it all went well, there was no problem fitting both guards...apart from having to stop and think where/how would those screws be fitted...
It was not easy....luckily the friend who helped me works with stuff like that for a living, so he had the right tool to make it easier, although he mentioned that when he was under the car...
I checked today at daylight, and I do not have those holes! I also guess that that place is solid, so I could drill two holes there... just don't know how...My friend that helped me lives 350km away, and my vacation is over and I'm back at home, so going there on purpose it's quite expensive! And how can you/me measure the hole size? by the lenght of the screw that should be there? And it will be safe to drill the diff? I'll get in touch with QT, maybe they have a solution....Although I bought those guards almost two years ago... ....and only fit them this week... my understanding is that the P38 diffs that were kicking about at LR had the holes and went into early Pumas, the later PUMAs had same diff but newly made and didnt have the holes in them.
My first 110 had the holes (58 plate) current one 60 plate doesnt. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Mine is 2010 model (assembled in March 2010), not quite an "early model". They should have tons of diffs left, if they were using them till the 2011 models! Wrote to QT, asking if they have a solution for it, besides drilling holes in the diff, but got no answer yet... Thanks Russ your right about "tolerance" I had to leave the bolts loose and use a pry bar to get a hole to line up. all fitted up great - front diff now wombat proof |
