My son's 1987 Defender came fitted with the above tyres, could any of you fellow enthusiasts tell us what tyre pressures are recommended for road use.

It's the size of the tyres and their ply ratings that are important for pressures. Eg the owners book suggests for a 750r16 that front be 28psi and rears be 45psi. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Nearly forgot. Your other alternative is to work it out by axle load. On the side of the tyre it should have a maximum load at a given pressure which by using maths can be calculated into actual pressure for a given load as taken from the vin tag under axle loads. Eg 1000kg at 65psi per tyre or .065psi per kg if axle load is 1500kg max then that would be 750kg per tyre. Multiply that by the .065psi and you get 48.75psi. These figures are solely for illustration purposes and do not reflect your tyres load capacity nor the axle weights of your vehicle. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Thank you, Sir. Slight problem the Zetex website states that for P235/70R16 the [u]maximum[/u] tyre pressure is 44psi. This would suggest that allowing for heating on the road the maximum safe would be about 40 psi.

Oh ok. Do the tyres have a load index number moulded in the side wall it will probably be with the the speed index letter. Eg q 106 or h 83 etc? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Ok been and had a look on their web page and apparently the size you mention is good for 950lg at 44psi or .0463psi per kg.
On the basis of my 300tdi 90 which may not be the same as yours the front axle load is 1200kg or 600per tyre so that gives 27.78psi or 28psi to be easier. The rear of my truck being a non high load is 1380kg or 690per tyre so that gives us 31.95psi or 32 for simple. Try them at 28psi and 32psi and see how it rides.[/i] Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon. |

I don't think the axle weights will be all that different between a turbo and a late tdi. But if they are put them in to the maths above and run them through again. What you will also find is that the size you have is actually the disco tdi size and was never offered as an option on the ninety. That said I would have them on mine as I think they look cool. I would start at 28 front and 34 rear and see how that works, from my own personal experience i would think you will end up with 30 front and 35 rear for mostly road work. For off road i would go for 28 all round if your not carrying too much in the back and for towing a big trailer on road i would go 30 front and 40 rear. All pressures in PSI.
